Drone worth $350,000 meant for monitoring wildlife and the environment is accidentally delivered to a college student in the US

A US government drone worth $350,000 was accidentally delivered to a college student by delivery service UPS.

Parts of the drone, which was designed to monitor wildlife and environmental changes and can fly for around two hours at a time, were delivered on Monday.

The student uploaded pictures of the package to Reddit under username Seventy_Seven before ringing UPS for an explanation.

"They told me that it was one of the undelivered packages in their office, and asked if I've ever had an undelivered package," they wrote. "I said no, but he insisted that it was mine, and said that it was up to me if I want to keep it or not.

"The UPS guy on the phone had said that this had been in storage, and was something that had been lost in transit, or in some other way went undelivered."

The user detailed how they had ordered a weightlifting bench through the post, and received the box containing the packaged drone parts in the same delivery bearing their name and address.

Other Reddit users pointed out it was a drone belonging to the US National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The student contacted the department, who are now attempting to arrange redelivery of the parts so the completed drone can begin flying.

David Miller, an NOAA spokesman, told Motherboard "We sent one of our Puma unmanned aircraft systems to Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary in Massachusetts.

"We sent a set of about eight boxes for this one aircraft system, and one was misdelivered by UPS."

Q. Am I obligated to return or pay for merchandise I never ordered?

A. No. If you receive merchandise that you didn’t order, you have a legal right to keep it as a free gift.
