Where Would You Be If You Did This?

It’s a silly question, of course, because “this” is shoot a guy full of holes, then menace responding cops with your gun. You’d have that whole Monty Python litany of synonyms for parrot death, plus one we’d add: you’d be perforated to perdition. Not Brendan Cronin,

Brendan Cronin, 27… allegedly pulled up to a traffic light a little before midnight Tuesday in Pelham, at the corner of Lincoln and Sixth Avenues, and fired his 9 millimeter Glock handgun at another car. The motive for the shooting is unclear.
…Cronin had started his day at a shooting range … and ended it at a bar, where he downed more than a few drinks.
The victim, 47-year-old Joe Felice, was sitting in the passenger seat of his friend’s car when he heard the gunshots. Upon realizing he’d been shot, he slid down in his seat, where he was struck five more times. Another bullet hit the headrest where his head had been moments before.
His friend then drove Felice to Montefiore Medical Center in The Bronx, where he was treated for six gunshot wounds in his torso, arms, and lungs. Felice is in stable condition.
Cronin drove away from the shooting. A short time later, motorists called 911 to report a car driving erratically with its hazard lights on. When cops chased down and stopped the vehicle, Cronin was inside. He brandished his gun out the window before officers eventually got him to toss the weapon to the ground.
…police later recovered 13 shell casings from the crime scene.

Cronin refused a breathalyzer test, because, well, he knew the fix is in. Because you see, Brendan Cronin isn’t just any drunk asshole with a gun. He’s a drunk cop with a gun, and in New York, that means he’s not even fired. After all, since the official policy of the NYPD is that if they let Joe Citizen have a pistol permit he might get drunk and go around shooting random things (as Chicago commissioner Garry McCarthy did when he was a New York cop, shooting out street lights in a drunken game with his brother and other cops, something for which McCarthy was never disciplined). You know, like Patrolman Brendan Cronin.

Fortunately these are exceedinly rare, once-in-a-decade occurrences, and in no means indicitave of the state of discipline in –

Three hours after the shooting in Pelham, another off-duty NYPD officer allegedly opened fire at her boyfriend and another woman outside a Somerset, New Jersey strip club. No one was injured. Sgt. Wanda Anthony allegedly fled the scene and was arrested three hours later for drunk driving.
Oh.
Well, OK, lightning did strike twice. And that’s NYPD marksmanship for you. Two shootings in a day and nobody hit but innocents, and nobody dead. But okay, that’s two incidents. It’s just what statisticians call a “cluster” that every random data set throws up now and then. It’s not like there’s another –
Last Thursday, a third off-duty NYPD cop,

Now we know why guns are verboten in New Yawk. If citizens were able to defend themselves from random psychotic drunks on shooting sprees, NYPD would be shorthanded the next morning.

Well, hardly ever.

10 times more likely to be killed by a cop than a terrorist.
