USA Today/Pew Poll: GOP Midterm Gains Could Be Largest in Two Decades

Monday, May 5, 2014 08:02 AM

Voters currently have so strong a preference for the Republican Party that if midterm elections were held today the results would signal the strongest gains for the GOP in two decades, a new poll has found.

According to the new USA Today/ Pew Research Center Poll (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2014/05/05/usa-today-pew-poll-midterm-landscape-tilts-to-gop/8520429/)conducted April 23-27 of 1,501 people, including 1,162 registered voters, 47 percent said they are inclined to support the Republican candidate over the Democrat in their congressional district in 2014, compared to 43 percent who would choose a Democrat.

That result is so massive that it suggests 2014 could be a major "wave" election more sweeping than the election of 2010 that saw the tea party movement's rise to dominance.

"That 4-percentage point edge may seem small, but it's notable because Democrats traditionally fare better among registered voters than they do among those who actually cast ballots, especially in low-turnout midterms," USA Today noted.

"The friendly landscape, if it holds, could help the GOP bolster its majority in the House and gain the six seats needed to claim control of the Senate."

The trend over the last six months in the polling data has shown that Democrats have lost ground, Pew said. Specifically, in October, Democrats had a 6-point lead (49 percent to 43 percent) in midterm voting preferences.

We will see. You know the other side is going to try and prevent the landslide that was 2010 by encouraging turnout, but really, I'd rather there be a large turnout with people putting in good candidates instead of the same career politicians we get saddled with.

Can't wait for more expensive wars to be continued...both droning and drug wars.

I much prefer it when the voters impose gridlock on D.C.. It doesn't seem to stop them but merely slows them down a bit.

There will be more gridlock with a Republican Senate. As you'll have a GOP Congress and Democratic President, but also Obama's terrible judicial nominees won't be able to be rubber-stamped any longer, after Reid changed the rules just for them.

Maybe a good strategy for the left is to present a skewed optimistic expectation for the Republicans. Then when they don't meet it smack them back down and say, "see what we stand for is what the people really want."

The GOP should probably take control of the senate but any gains in the house will be minimal.

I only care that we add allies to Paul, Amash and Massie.
