CLARKSTON, MI -- During his tenure in Lansing, State Rep. Tom McMillin said the problem advancing legislation or launching programs is often because of Washington D.C.

Lawmakers and groups are either afraid they will lose money or be penalized by the federal government because of requirements or regulations.

"It's time and time again we run into areas where the problem is Washington," McMillin told a crowd of some 90 people gathered in Clarkston on Saturday. "I'm going to the belly of the beast and I'm going to go there to push things back and bring some common sense."

McMillin officially kicked off his bid for Congress on Saturday in Rochester Hills. He is one of two Republicans running in the primary to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, who is not seeking another term.

During the event, McMillin was joined by former State House colleague and U.S. Rep Justin Amash, who has received national attention for his strong independent streak and willingness to buck the party line.

"I came to recognize Tom McMillin was an amazing person," said Amash, who was elected in 2010 and has become a leader for the Tea Party movement. "Someone who ... was willing to stand up to both parties to do the right thing if necessary."

There were more people than chairs ... always a good sign I think.

Is McMillin with Amash on issues like foreign policy and civil liberties?

He's really hardcore against the NSA, perhaps in a way that Justin Amash is not even. Other civil liberty issues he is good too, very outspoken on stuff such as police militarization and civil asset forfeiture. For more see this thread:

On foreign policy he doesn't have much on record since he is only a state rep and just started his campaign for US congress, but here are some tweets and retweets that might indicate his leanings:

also he has a reputation for being very anti-abortion, which I'm sure you will like.

Yes yes yes. I really want to see the Rogers wing of the party take a loss. I was hoping Hune would run, but this is even better.

according to the article McMillin has ran for congress before. It was in 1998 apparently, here are the numbers:

Dale Kildee (D) 55.9%
Tom McMillin (R) 41.9%
Malcolm Johnson (L) 2.2%

They have redrawn the districts since that time. Kildee is still in office. He represents Flint. That seat will always be blue unless the Gods favor us with a flood or fire. Apparently chaos and famine aren't enough to shake it off.

ETA: I always get this backwards. Dale retired, Dan Kildee is in.

How cool would it be to have a Rand Paul endorsement and appearance in Livingston County when Tom opens up a campaign office there?

That would definitely get him some media play and a second look from the conservatives in the area.

Tom's the real deal. He's taking on all kinds of powerful entrenched interests in the State House including the NSA:

http://michigan.tenthamendmentcenter.com/2014/03/25/the-offnow-campaign-to-nullify-nsa-comes-to-michigan/

One thing worth noting is that he's a hardcore social conservative. Though he is excellent on many liberty issues, and can bring together so-cons, libertarians and ACLU-style leftists like few others. Definitely worth supporting and he'd basically be another Amash in the House.
