05/02/14 11:30 a.m. Update

Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge held a news conference Friday morning regarding the arrest of Jones County Sheriff's Deputy Stephanie Renee Fenner earlier this week. The Monday arrest followed the investigation into a bizarre series of events that occurred late Friday night, April 25.

Standridge says Fenner was intoxicated when officers showed up at a convenience store at Old Anson Road and North Clack Street following a disturbance call. Fenner had allegedly gotten out of her pickup and shot at the truck three times with a semi-automatic handgun; two other people were still inside the truck. Fenner then started walking away, and the two victims in the truck told the convenience store clerk to call 911.

Officers said they did not see a gun when they arrived on scene, but noticed Fenner was intoxicated. The Jones County deputy rushed an officer as he was attempting to detain her, forcing the officer to tase Fenner.

However, even after being tased, Fenner continued to fight until officers were able to get handcuffs on her. Abilene police say they never saw a gun, and were unaware of the shots being fired. Standridge admitted that officers at the scene did not interview the convenience store clerk or the two victims in the pickup truck.

The Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation was called in response to several suicidal threats Fenner made during her transfer to the Law Enforcement Center, where they met with and interviewed her.

It was determined that Fenner was not suicidal, and though Chief Standridge said officers knew Fenner had committed several crimes that night, an Abilene police supervisor let the 26-year-old deputy go home with her parents, instead of going to jail. Fenner's father, Patrick Fenner, was a longtime Abilene police officer and now works in law enforcement in Jones County.

The Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation was called...

Appropriate call, but doesn't this Department have a politically incorrect name? Better close them down.
