When Sen. Lindsey Graham received a major endorsement last week from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the setting was, from a campaign-optics perspective, nearly perfect.

Graham, joined by representatives from the national and regional arms of the organization, stood in a vast warehouse of a local manufacturer, where he was flanked by supporters holding signs. But as Graham began to speak, a driving rain pounded the warehouse roof, drowning out all other noise. The Republican senator had no microphone, and so he did his best to yell out his remarks.

Had Graham been facing a competitive challenge to his re-election this year, the inclement weather might have ruined an important campaign event. But Graham isn't, and the soggy audio didn't matter.

Instead, Graham, counter to the early prognostications of many, has quelled any potential threats from Tea Party insurgents and, two months ahead of the Republican primary, is cruising to a third term in the Senate -- still gleefully tackling those controversial topics that might have made him vulnerable in the first place.

Graham is in this position by no accident. Wary of other incumbents who have not prepared for competitive re-election campaigns and lost, Graham and his campaign team have spent the intervening years raising money and shoring up support among South Carolina's political class -- all but guaranteeing Graham's path to victory.

Graham's longtime campaign manager, Scott Farmer, recalled a motto beloved by former South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond to describe Graham's approach: “Senator Thurmond had a saying: ‘You always run like you're behind and take nothing for granted.' Sen. Graham has always taken that advice to heart and run very aggressive campaigns.”

Now, while his Republican opponents scramble to scrape together campaign donations and support, Graham has been hosting relaxed barbecues for supporters across the state, free of charge.

“You serve people free barbecue, and they will come,” Graham said, grinning, at a recent event in Simpsonville, S.C., where aides had just added another table to squeeze in the last few of a 130-person crowd.

Free stuff wins votes. Spoken like a good Trotskyite-Marxist socialist.

Edit: On second thought, that's probably a good use of campaign funds, and doesn't seem like a very expensive way to win votes.

Fine. Get behind the Democrat running against him. Best to get him out and suffer 2 years of some other turd in hopes that it will clear the field for someone decent.

Well it's unlikely that the Dems are going to front liberty candidates so yeah the worst of the worst is the neo-fascist Republicans. It's better to suffer a few years under the socialist Dems in order to clear a spot for a liberty Repub.

Thanks for the bit of humor in an otherwise depressing thread

George Washington used to buy his votes with booze.

There are funny stories about a long departed in-law that was a Democrat in Illinois. She used to drive to the poor neighborhoods and drive voters to polls. She either provided booze or cash to those who came along.

Agree. They don't mention a single poll or even mention his opponents. The only evidence he's "cruising" to re-election is a bunch of quotes by Lindsey's staff and Lindsey himself.

We all know too well how media and polls are used to sabotage some and promote others.

Lindsey Graham doesnt even vote against Supreme Court judges. He is useless. One of his Democrat opponents is actually identical to Graham on most issues (immigration, taxes, probably foreign policy). I'd vote for him just as a nobody Democrat like Joe Donnelly.

There is a competitive Democratic primary so Lindsey Graham will lose some of his most loyal followers. The Democrats also have an outside chance of beating Graham if 40%+ of Republicans vote against Graham. Nikki Haley is behind the Adelson gambling ban.

"two months ahead of the Republican primary,"

I read somewhere that the plan was to flood the primary with as many choices as possible.

The winner, in South Carolina, needs 50% to win. If the winner doesn't get 50%, there's a runoff between 1 and 2.

This article doesn't seem to recognize any of this, or I'm mistaken. Even so, the top tea party challenger doesn't really need 2 months. A last minute blast reminding people how much Lindsey sucks could be enough.

With his large lead in both polls and fundraising, Graham is poised to come out on top in the June 10 primary. But whether he can hit 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff two weeks later is another matter entirely.

I'd contribute money to this race. Could some big tea party group start raising money and buying airtime 1) to beat up on Lindsey before the primary and 2) to help whoever comes in 2nd. I'd contribute to the #2 in the run-off and I don't care who it is.

It appears that the establishment is running a Democrat (Det Bowers) in the GOP Primary. Probably being financed by Graham backers. They are giving him big bucks, and would like to have Det (a Democrat) vs. Graham in the run-off. "Oh gee, how did a Democrat get into the GOP run-off? That only leaves us with one choice..."
