Reid apologizes for racial remarks about Obama during campaign

Journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann reported the remarks in their new book, "Game Change," which is scheduled to be in bookstores Tuesday.
The authors quote Reid as saying privately that Obama, as a black candidate, could be successful thanks, in part, to his "light-skinned" appearance and speaking patterns "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

In a statement to CNN, Reid said, "I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words."
"I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans for my improper comments.

However, the reality is that he is, in fact, one of the most ethically challenged politicians in office today. Harry Reid’s Alliance with Jack Abramoff

Soon after the Jack Abramoff scandal broke, Reid took the lead in attacking Republicans for fostering a “culture of corruption.” (1)

But shortly after making these comments, it was reported that Reid took almost $68,000 from Abramoff’s firm, its PAC and its Indian casino clients. (2)

Reid then tried to distance himself from Abramoff, stating, “[D]on’t lump me in with Jack Abramoff. This is a Republican scandal. Don’t try to give any of it to me.” (3)

And how did Rory's dad reap a million-dollar profit on the sale of land he didn't own? Reid bought some undeveloped land outside of booming Las Vegas in 1998 and sold it for the same price in 2001 to a company owned by longtime pal and casino lawyer Jay Brown, whose name has surfaced in organized-crime investigations. Reid got no money but got a stake in Brown's company.
Reid did not disclose the sale on his annual public-ethics report but said that he owned the land until it was resold in 2004. Brown resold it, and Reid got a $1.1 million gain on land that he hadn't owned in three years.

He waited two years to apologize; only apologized because there was a book coming out quoting him saying this.

I would add: he was given absolution because his supporters stand by him, keeping focus on what they see as the bigger issues. We should do the same.

ENN scored big when Clark County commissioners unanimously voted to sell the Chinese company the public land for just $4.5 million, despite the fact that it was appraised at $38.6 million.
Sen. Reid has been one of ENN’s biggest supporters, having recruited the company during a 2011 trip to China. Reid tried to “pressure Nevada's largest power company, NV Energy, to sign up as ENN's first customer.”
Both Rory Reid and Harry Reid deny having ever discussed the $5 billion Chinese solar panel plant deal:

"I have never discussed the project with my father or his staff," said Rory Reid. Kristen Orthman, a spokeswoman for the senator, said he had not discussed the project with his son.

A key Intelligence source has confirmed the threat as “credible.” Department of Homeland Security officials, along with members of the Department of Agriculture and the FDA, have briefed a small group of corporate security officers from the hotel and restaurant industries about it.

Excerpt from an article, Harry Reid making racial comments about Clarence Thomas:

Reid has waded into the minefield of prejudice and stereotyping before. I can't help but think of his outrageous statements about Clarence Thomas back in 2005, when some were urging President Bush to make Thomas the first African American chief justice.

We all know Thomas's compelling life story: growing in the harrowing days of Jim Crow in the segregated South, struggling to break free from poverty and racism, becoming the first black child to integrate all-white schools, graduating with honors from the seminary and Holy Cross before Yale Law School. Thomas succeeded on his unquestioned intellect and his determination and hard work.

Thomas is one of the Court's most original and compelling thinkers, and his opinions are praised by scholars on the Left and the Right as important contributions. You may not agree with a single word Clarence Thomas says, and it may drive you crazy that he took Thurgood Marshall's seat on the Supreme Court, but you can't call him stupid or deny he's an important intellectual force.

Unless you're Harry Reid.

In an interview with the late Tim Russert on NBC's Meet the Press, Reid called Thomas "an embarrassment to the Supreme Court" whose "opinions are poorly written," and said he hadn't "done a good job" as a justice. But Antonin Scalia? Well, Reid said, he's a different story. Scalia, Reid told Tim, "is one smart guy."

Tim gave me permission to use that exchange when I was working for ABC and doing a segment for Nightline on Clarence Thomas and stereotypes, racism and double standards. Reid's comment's fit right in, because the segment was about how some people embrace the false and offensive narrative that Thomas has no intellectual firepower and is just a puppet of the dazzling conservative Scalia.

Here's the entire exchange:

RUSSERT: Let me turn to judicial nominations. Again, Harry Reid on National Public Radio, Nov. 19: "If they" -- the Bush White House -- "for example, gave us Clarence Thomas as chief justice, I personally feel that would be wrong. If they give us Antonin Scalia, that's a little different question. I may not agree with some of his opinions, but I agree with the brilliance of his mind."

RUSSERT: Could you support Antonin Scalia to be chief justice of the Supreme Court?

REID: If he can overcome the ethics problems that have arisen since he was selected as a justice of the Supreme Court. And those ethics problems --you've talked about them; every people talk -- every reporter's talked about them in town -- where he took trips that were probably not in keeping with the code of judicial ethics. So we have to get over this. I cannot dispute the fact, as I have said, thatthis is one smart guy. And I disagree with many of the results that he arrives at, but his reason for arriving at those results are very hard to dispute. So --

RUSSERT: Why couldn't you accept Clarence Thomas?

REID: I think that he has been an embarrassment to the Supreme Court. I think that his opinions are poorly written. I don't -- I just don't think that he's done a good job as a Supreme Court justice.

That's not Mississippi, or Jim Crow. That's not the Dixiecrats or segregationists. That is race in America, modern-day.

In an interview in 2008, I asked Thomas why people continue to embrace this grossly false storyline -- why they sell him short, understate his intellect -- and why they persistently believe he merely has "followed" Scalia, when in fact there's absolutely no basis for that.

"Give me a break. I mean this is part of the — you know, the black guy is supposed to follow somebody white. We know that," Thomas told me. "Come on, we know the story behind that. I mean there's no need to sort of tip-toe around that … The story line was that, well I couldn't be doing this myself, he must be doing it for me because I'm black. That's obvious. Again, I go back to my point. Who were the real bigots? It's obvious."

But why no uproar, I asked. Why no outcry?

"People feel free to say about me what they think about lots of blacks," Thomas told me. "Because of the heterodox views I've taken, they have license to say it about me with impunity."

Or put another way: In Harry Reid's worldview, Clarence Thomas isn't the "right" kind of black guy.

Doesn't matter. You can't, on the one hand, use that word with impunity, and then vilify someone else who uses it in the same non-racist way. It's a double-standard that need to be exposed.

“You don’t go far in Nevada before you run into Harry Reid, or one of his people, or somebody who he’s helped come along, or someone he’s helping come along,” explained Steve Sebelius, a Nevada political journalist and longtime Reid-watcher. “His reach is pretty far. … He’s at the top of the heap.”

“It’s like an iron fist inside a titanium glove,” said Sebelius of Reid’s control over the state’s Democratic Party. “His people are firmly in control. Who runs is who he wants to run, and who doesn’t run is who he doesn’t want to run. There’s no one on the Republican side with that kind of influence and control.”

Damore suggested that Reid -- because of his extensive in-state political network and status as Senate majority leader -- may be “the most powerful politician in Nevada state history,” an assertion that several other state political experts agreed with (or at least saw some merit in). But Nevada politicos don’t really debate about the degree of Reid’s power. Rather, the question is whether he has always used it appropriately.

Yet, his estimated net worth peaked at around $10 million just a few years ago, and he has remained consistently wealthier than when he entered Congress. (Reid reported that his net worth in 2012 was somewhere between $2.8 million and $6.3 million. His 2013 financial disclosures will be released later this year.) The rest was made up of government bonds; stakes in energy, electronics, pharmaceutical, and chemical companies; and other investments. How did Reid manage to grow his net worth so significantly while raising a large family, on a public official’s salary, and incurring the expenses associated with maintaining two residences on opposite sides of the country? Reid has lived frugally -- before buying a house in recent years, he kept just a trailer in his hometown of Searchlight -- and he has made undeniably savvy investments. More significantly, however, is his willingness to enter political and ethical gray areas to make money.

Reid has walked a fine line over the years, occasionally breaking rules or engaging in brazenly unseemly behavior during his pursuit of wealth. Further, he has also used his position to save money in ways that the general public can’t -- a practice that creates public relations issues and raises questions about the senator’s ethics. As for any illegal behavior or obvious wrongdoing, Jon Ralston told RCP, “There’s been some smoke but there’s never any fire on that.”

LAS VEGAS -- Some voters in Boulder City said they are concerned about fraud at the electronic ballot box.

Voter Joyce Ferrara said when they went to vote for Republican Sharron Angle, her Democratic opponent, Sen. Harry Reid's name was already checked.

Ferrara said she wasn't alone in her voting experience. She said her husband and several others voting at the same time all had the same thing happen.

"Something's not right," Ferrara said. "One person that's a fluke. Two, that's strange. But several within a five minute period of time -- that's wrong."

Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax said there is no voter fraud, although the issues do come up because the screens are sensitive.

He said if voters choose English (instead of Spanish) for their language of choice, the ballot pops up with Angle selected.

"Especially in a community with elderly citizens (they have) difficulty in (casting their) ballot," Lomax said. "Team leaders said there were complaints (and the) race filled in."

Lomax said voters need to have faith in the system.

"This election, I think, more than ever," he said. "The two sides are very fractured and each side is suspicious and we're caught in the middle."

Yet this outcome, the result of amysterious computer glitch, may have helped re-elect Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid over his Republican challenger, Sharron Angle, last week by a 50.2%-44.6% margin. Actually, the "mystery" is very likely the doing of a local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which nationwide provides votes, money and muscle for the Democratic Party. Critics are charging that voting machines throughout Clark County (http://theintelhub.com/2010/11/03/harry-reid-steals-nevada-wins-amid-fraud/) (Las Vegas), where about three-fourths of Nevada's population resides, were rigged to place check marks next to Reid's name before a person even had voted. County officials insist that no tampering occurred. But the possibility can't be dismissed, especially given that one of Reid's sons is county commission chairman.
The Service Employees, with around 2.2 million members and affiliates, has emerged as one of the most powerful forces in American politics. This union of public- and private-sector employees by now is an adjunct to the progressive wing of the Democratic Party; i.e., most of the party. It has good reason for assuming this role. SEIU leaders know that if its preferred candidates win, government at all levels likely grows. And that means more contracts, employees and dues for the union. Andrew Stern, who stepped down as Service Employees president this spring after 14 years, last year boasted his organization spent $60.7 million to get Barack Obama elected president (http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2009/may/10/stern-unplugged-seiu-chief-labor-movement-and-card/). The union also spent an estimated $44 million (http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/Voting-machines-in-Clark-County-Nevada-automatically-checking-Harry-Reids-name-Voting-machine-technicians-are-members-of-SEIU-105815608.html) in the most recent election cycle, almost all of it on Democrats. The union long has cultivated close relationships with another unofficial party appendage, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN. Indeed, SEIU Locals 100 and 880 (the latter recently reorganized as SEIU Healthcare Illinois & Indiana) were founded during the Eighties as ACORN projects.

At times it is difficult to determine where the Democratic Party ends and the union begins. The SEIU, having worked overtime for the party, has been rewarded with almost unlimited access to the current administration. Records show that Stern was the most frequent White House visitor last year, raising widespread suspicions that he'd violated federal lobbying statutes (http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/60735). President Obama's political director, Patrick Gaspard, had been a top operative for SEIU and a number of ACORN fronts. Few unions worked harder and longer to secure congressional support for Obama's initiatives, most crucially, the exhorbitant health care overhaul whose sleight-of-hand passage (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1209/30815.html) was co-engineered by Harry Reid.
The Service Employees doesn't just operate at the national level. It has built dedicated cadres of organizers and fundraisers in many states, Nevada, with its large hotel-casino workforce, among those states. During the recently concluded election cycle, the SEIU donated $500,000 to Patriot Majority PAC, a Washington, D.C.-based political action committee formed in October 2009 by Democratic Party strategist Craig Varoga; the PAC in turn spent $1.3 million on Reid's Senate campaign.

But the Service Employees also may be supplying labor for Democrats in a rather insidious way. A collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between Clark County and SEIU Local 1107 puts the union in charge of servicing all voting machines. The agreement reads as follows:

The County hereby recognizes the Union as the sole and exclusive collective bargaining representative of the County employees assigned to the classifications listed in Appendix A who are eligible to be represented by the Union except as limited by Section 2 of this Article. The Union shall be notified of additions to the list of classifications (Exhibit A) within seven (7) days of posting for the position classification and shall receive 30 days advance notice of any deletions.


Page 75 of this agreement indicates "Voting Machine Technician" (http://rightwingnews.com/2010/10/machines-voting-by-themselves-seiu-and-free-food-nevada-is-getting-weird/) to be a classified SEIU position in Exhibit A. Although the CBA expired on June 30, 2010, it remains in force because of language in Article 43 which grants an indefinite year-to-year extension until one party deems it unworkable.
Given that SEIU Local 1107 technicians run Clark County voting machines, any glitches in the end must be the responsibility of these workers. And these glitches appear to have been no accident. In late October, during early balloting, for example, a number of voters in Boulder City (southeast of Las Vegas) complained Reid's name already was checked. According to one eyewitness, Joyce Ferrara (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2010/10/harry-reid-sharron-angle-voting-machine.html), the problem was rampant. "Something's not right," she said. "One person, that's a fluke. Two, that's strange. But several within a five-minute period of time - that's wrong."
Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/10/27/watchdog-warns-seiu-contract-nevada-voting-machines-poses-fraud-concern/) doesn't see evidence of vote fraud. He cited high-sensitivity touch screens as the most likely explanation for any discrepancies between voter intent and result. He stated that it would have been impossible for voting machines to put a check mark next to a candidate's name without a voter's consent, adding that nobody had reported the problem to him or anyone else on his staff. Nevada SEIU spokesman Nick Di Archangel (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/10/27/watchdog-warns-seiu-contract-nevada-voting-machines-poses-fraud-concern/) also dismissed the possibility of fraud. "The machines cannot be compromised," he assured Fox5Vegas.com in an e-mail. Yet such responses raise the issue of why Reid's opponent, Sharron Angle, didn't benefit from these apparent mishaps.

As a result, we need to deploy literally dozens of election law attorneys and poll watchers to combat these tactics at a cost of nearly $80,000. That's over and above our current budget...Now, this week in Las Vegas, at our election hotline, we received reports that some teachers' union representatives were offering Starbucks cards to people to get them to vote for Harry Reid. It is even more disturbing and may be possible that they are using their influence and authority as educators to entice students on behalf of Reid.

In North Carolina, an incident was reported in which a voter tried to vote a straight Republican ticket and instead the voting machine indicated that a straight Democratic ticket was voted.

Sam Laughinghouse of New Bern said he pushed the button to vote Republican in all races, but the voting machine screen displayed a ballot with all Democrats checked. He cleared the screen and tried again with the same result, he said. Then he asked for and received help from election staff.
‘They pushed it twice and the same thing happened,' Laughinghouse said. ‘That was four times in a row. The fifth time they pushed it and the Republicans came up and I voted.'

Whether or not union members serviced voting machines in that state, the reality remains this: Electronic voting is less than tamper-proof. And that creates a window of opportunity for fraud.
What raises a cloud of suspicion over Harry Reid's victory by nearly six percentage points is that he actually had been the underdog. Four separate Rasmussen polls prior to the election had Angle ahead. Two weeks before the big day, she was up 50% to 47%. A week later, she'd extended her lead to 49%-45%. In other words, the pendulum had swung in Reid's favor by at least 10 points in the final week. That's a rather odd turn of events amid a Republican landslide.

It's noteworthy that Senator Reid's eldest son, Rory, serves as chairman of the Clark County board of commissioners and was the Democratic nominee in the 2010 governor's race, losing convincingly to Republican Brian Sandoval. One could argue, in devil's advocate fashion, that if Rory Reid couldn't rig his own victory, there is no way he could have done likewise on behalf of his father. It's a valid point, but it doesn't necessarily let Reid the Younger off the hook, who was behind in the polls by at least 20 percentage points. Sandoval wound up winning by 53.4% to 41.6%. A Rory Reid victory in the gubernatorial race would have so improbable that it might have raised too many suspicions for comfort, whereas Harry Reid, who had far more at stake, was close enough in his own race to make a rigged victory look legitimate.

Is this idle speculation? An investigation would be the only way to find out. Unfortunately, a recount is not likely possible. In addition to being highly vulnerable to hacker attacks that switch out memory chips (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2010/10/harry-reid-sharron-angle-voting-machine.html) (thus altering how votes are tallied), computerized voting leaves no audit trail to see who voted for whom. Moreover, Nevada's Sequoia AVC Edge touch-screen machines have a documented history of high vulnerability to errors and infiltration. And most egregiously, voting officials in that state, as in others, may have a habit of removing memory cards and hard drives not long after the polls close, thus eliminating evidence of voter intent. In federal elections, such a practice is against the law. The Retention of Voting Documentation Act (http://www.uselections.com/select_fed.htm#8) requires retention for 22 months of "all records and papers, which came into their [election officials] relating to an application, registration, payment of a poll tax, or other act requisite to voting." If Clark County, Nevada has been less than punctilious about observing this statute, it might be a reflection of who's in charge.

A criminal investigation, then, appears the only way of getting at the truth. It wouldn't be a first for Nevada. A state probe of voter registration fraud (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30567548/) in connection with the 2008 elections yielded evidence that dozens of ACORN-hired canvassers from a state prison release program had submitted hundreds of suspect, if not phony, registration cards. Former Las Vegas ACORN Field Director Christopher Edwards (http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2009/aug/18/deal-ex-acorn-official-cops-voter-quota-scheme/) eventually pleaded guilty to two gross misdemeanor counts. Bill Wilson (http://netrightdaily.com/2010/10/the-seiu-harry-reid-and-voting-problems/), president of Americans for Limited Government, issued a post-election statement calling for a joint federal-state investigation of Harry Reid's recent Senate election:
It is positively outrageous that in Clark County, Nevada, the SEIU Local 1107, which supports Harry Reid, controls the ballot boxes by contract through their representation of the voting machine technicians. It is not surprising that Senator Harry Reid's name was automatically checked off on the ballot when individuals went to vote. The U.S. Attorney's Office, the Nevada State Attorney General, and the U.S. Marshals need to act now to ensure that the SEIU does not continue to compromise the integrity of ballots in Nevada, and anywhere else in the country.


What if an investigation turns up nothing? At the very least, Nevada and other electronic-voting states should go back to manual voting for the time being, and hire more poll watchers and attorneys. The monstrous Josef Stalin famously declared: "Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything." In a perverse way, he was right. We're finding that out in Nevada.

According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, Reid and Whittemore go way back; four of Reid’s sons were hired by the law firm in which Harvey Whittemore was a senior partner. Sen. Reid and Whittemore were involved in very big land deals, including federal legislation to help the development of Coyote Springs.

Further, Loesch reports, Harry Reid pressured the BLM to change the tortoise's protected zone to accommodate developer Harvey Whittemore, one of the Democrat's top donors. Whittemore was convicted in May 2013 of making illegal campaign contributions to him.

One of Harry Reid’s bodyguards accosted a conservative journalist for asking a few basic questions about the Senate Majority Leader’s wealth.

Jason Mattera, author of the explosive new book CRAPITALISM: Liberals Who Make Millions Swiping Your Tax Dollars, recently caught up with Reid and asked him, “How did you become so rich working in government?” The senator refused to answer.

Mattera, who publishes Daily Surge, followed up. “How does someone on a government salary most of their career accumulate your type of wealth?” Still, there was no answer from Reid.

Suddenly, one of the Majority Leader’s bodyguards intervened. “Are you press?” he asked, before shoving Mattera and then pinning him against a wall.

“What are you doing holding me up like that?” Mattera asked the bodyguard.

After the author identified himself as a member of the press, the bodyguard retorted, “I don’t care if you’re press or not.” The man refused to give Mattera his name.

WHAT IS THE HARRY REID CONNECTION?

U.S. Sen Harry Reid, who actually lives in a fancy hotel in Washington City and wears tailored gray suits most of the time, returns to Nevada every six years to don a pair of blue jeans and get his picture taken sitting on a hay bale and fondling the .22 rifle with which he recalls once shooting rabbits as a kid. He consistently wins re-election in close races by carrying only two of Nevada’s 17 counties -– Mineral County in the north, which is depressed but still heavily dependent on federal funding for its military ammo dump, and massive and increasingly Democratic Clark County, home of Las Vegas.

Harry Reid is a fragile and elderly politician who has had several supposedly “mini” strokes and who often mis-speaks, or says things so odd that — if they emerged from the mouth of a public figure on the political right — would be mercilessly ridiculed by the leftist commentariat, as well as prompting suggestions that retirement might be in order.

Following the collapse of the BLM’s armed assault -– complete with men in full combat regalia with leveled combat rifles who observers with military expertise called “the Homeland Security Army” -– surely any savvy politicians would have publicly regretted things going so far, calling for new efforts to resolve things peacefully . . . however they may have felt in private.

Not Harry Reid. When the latest BLM effort to round up Bundy’s cattle or prompt a shoot-out backfired and had to be called off, Sen. Reid made it personal, branding Bundy’s non-violent supporters as “domestic terrorists” and vowing “It’s not over.”

He went further. A few days later Sen. Reid, sounding like a cheap gangster, predicted “something would happen” to Cliven Bundy.

Why? Why would the most powerful man in the U.S. Senate want so badly to get rid of Cliven Bundy’s little herd of cows? If nothing else, the Bundys have lots of Nevada relatives who are, after all, Sen. Reid’s constituents.

Well, the federal judge who in 2001 stunningly ruled that the federal government “owns” 86 percent of Nevada, Johnnie Rawlinson, was nominated for that post by Harry Reid. Rawlinson is black; it’s hard to deny her appointment was made in part to firm up Sen. Reid’s support among black voters. And the boss of the BLM, who doubtless OKd the big Bundy raid, was a chief Reid staffer from 2003 to 2011. So it would indeed have been difficult for the senator to shrug and say “All I know is what I read in the papers.”

But there’s more going on, here.

Former Review-Journal editor Tom Mitchell wrote on his 4thST8 blog on April 11, 2014::

“For some reason a web page the BLM had once posted listing its reasons for the confiscation of Cliven Bundy’s cattle in the Gold Butte area has been taken down, but a cache of the page is still extant.

“One of the more unusual aspects of the page comes under the heading of ‘Examples of Restoration Funding and Viability Impacted’:

“‘Non-Governmental Organizations have expressed concern that the regional mitigation strategy for the Dry Lake Solar Energy Zone utilizes Gold Butte as the location for offsite mitigation for impacts from solar development, and that those restoration activities are not durable with the presence of trespass cattle.’

“I have no idea what any of that means in English,” Mitchell wrote, though of course he does. It means the federals have already accepted the planned “Gold Butte Conservation Area” -– the fenced-off Bundy ranch without its cattle -– as an acceptable replacement for the acres of supposed “tortoise habitat” that would be destroyed by the big Red Chinese solar plant planned for the Dry Lake bed down near Laughlin -– a plant which could not be built without the Red Chinese somehow making Harry Reid their friend, since it would also require both federal subsidies and a Nevada state legislative requirement that local monopoly utility companies buy a certain percentage of their power from high-priced solar sources, even though this drives up local power bills.

“So, cattle bad. Solar panels good,” Mitchell notes. “Harry Reid likes solar panels.”

Another long-term Reid donor and supporter, Harvey Whittemore, didn’t have much trouble getting an exemption from tortoise protection rules when he wanted to put a big residential development at Coyote Springs, in the empty desert northwest of the Bundy grazing allotment.

Whittemore was later convicted of making illegal campaign contributions to Sen. Harry Reid, though of course no culpability for accepting the donations in any kind of “quid pro quo” arrangement was ever assigned to “Mr. Cleanface.” The Coyote Springs development appears to have died on the vine with the big housing market collapse of 2008.

Who’s the lawyer who appears to be doing pretty well promoting that Dry Lake Solar Zone, which has had a fantastic run of luck in seeking exemptions or “mitigation” approval for the tortoise habitat its solar panels will supposedly destroy? Um . . . that would be Harry Reid’s son, Rory Reid.

Unfortunately for the Reid Machine, it appears the senator’s good friend, Red Chinese energy billionaire and solar tycoon Yusuo Wang, pulled the plug on the big Laughlin solar farm about a year ago, in the summer of 2013. Even Sen. Reid’s arm twisting had not proved sufficient to win commitments from monopoly California and Nevada energy providers to buy hundreds of megawatts of high-priced Chinese solar power.
