PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Once again, Portland officials are preparing to flush millions of gallons of treated water because a young person urinated into a city reservoir.

Water Bureau Administrator David Shaff said 38 million gallons will be discarded because a 19-year-old was caught in the act on Wednesday.

Three years ago, the city drained a 7.5 million-gallon reservoir.

The open reservoirs hold water that's already been treated and goes directly into mains for distribution to customers.

The urine poses little health risk, but city officials don't want customers to think the water's tainted.

Didn't this happen recently somewhere else, or is it the same place?

What is the point of treating water and then letting it sit out in the open? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of treating it?

Yeah, that was my first thought. Who in the hell sets potable water out in the open outdoors for a while before sending it to your faucets. Are these people high?

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)

Oh, LOL. Note to self, if ever in Portland, don't drink the tap water. :D

Government fails again.

Yep.

There is nothing wrong with letting it sit out in the open. That's the way it has traditionally been done and is perfectly safe, as even the idiots wasting all this perfectly safe water (in the middle of a drought) themselves acknowledge. So no, it does not defeat the purpose at all.

I think what is going on here is that corrupt local officials want to do away with the open reservoirs because it will necessitate hundreds of million in construction contracts as well as necessitating the steady purchase of a lot more chemicals to put in the water. And besides the kickbacks that entails, it also helps justify huge rate increases in public water costs that they want to push through.

Of course if they had said and done nothing and it came out, half the city would have been suing because they had typhoid.

Why not just treat the water again instead of "throwing it out"?

we're talking about Portland Oregon, not Death Valley...

resevoirs are drained on a regular basis anyway for cleaning.......relax.

I can see why they did that, it's because there's going to be "ew nasty."

They threw it out simply for customer satisfaction as stated.

Realistically speaking, isn't that like more than enough water to fill up over ~~250 average-ish houses completely or something?
Pretty big amount of water thrown out in perspective.

Yet, all processed foods are allowed a certain percentage of "Bug Parts"? Post people would become nausious if they knew how many Bug Parts were in their favorite ice cream. Oh, dont forget recycling "Waste Water" too.

I remember the first time I drank big city water, it stank like sewer and tasted horrible. I don't know how people can drink that stuff. Even bottled water has a little bit of a strange after taste.
