The US Navy on Saturday christened the first of its newest class of destroyers – the more than $3 billion (£1.8 billion), 610-foot (186-metre)-long USS Zumwalt.

Named after the late Admiral Elmo “Bud” Zumwalt, the warship sports advanced technology and a stealthy shape designed to minimise its visibility on enemy radar and reduce the size of its crew.

Among the 15,000-tonne destroyer's cutting-edge features are a composite deckhouse with hidden radar and sensors and an angular shape that officials say will allow it to be confused for a small fishing boat on radars. It also has a wave-piercing hull designed to reduce the ship's wake.

It's the first US ship to use electric propulsion and produces enough power to one day support the futuristic electromagnetic rail gun, which will be tested at sea in 2016.

Rail guns fire a projectile at six or seven times the speed of sound – enough velocity to cause severe damage. The Navy sees them as replacing or supplementing old-school guns.

So what if the enemy comes and check out this small "fishing boat" on radar... I sure as hell would check out what the hell a shipping boat is doing near my boat.

3 billion dollar waste.

No one is going to believe a fishing vessel traveling at 30 knots.

it is as stupid as "stealth technology".. which was defeated before it ever flew.

And now that it's public anyone would know to investigate and not ignore any vessel that shows up even as a small fishing boat. Total waste. Oops...that's not what I'm supposed to say. I mean, RAH RAH 'MURIKA RULES!

Sailors fell free to correct me but isn't this bow design unstable at rough open seas? And why do they need advanced artillery on it when every country has anti-ship missiles which will always have a bigger range than those rail guns.I doubt they are doing it to save money.

That is an interesting hull design.

They can cut the hearts out of enemy sailors and throw them from the conning tower to appease the sun god.

We'll need at least 30 of them to fight a few jihadists in the middle of a desert.

Wave-piercing bows are over 100 years old, look at pictures of late 19th-early 20th century Battleships.

Good points are a smoother ride and faster in displacement hulls for a given power plant, hence also more fuel efficient.

Bad points are they are much wetter and can carry much less cargo than other designs of the same length,so not good if you need men working on deck in bad weather or get paid depending on how much product you can deliver to market.

Lots of times I've been out sailing, being seen, and seeing others seemed a good thing.

And to be honest with you, I think a correctly configured radar would make these ships and planes stand out like sore thumbs.
