And here we go. With McCain cheering and calling for the US to help, it looks like the new Ukrainian government is going to try to use military force to crush protestors. It worked so well for Gaddafi and Assad, might as well give it a go in Ukraine.

Hold on, doesn't McCain usually want to arm the "freedom fighters", "rebels" and al-Qaeda?

SLOVYANSK, Ukraine — The Ukrainian government on Sunday for the first time sent in its security services to confront armed pro-Russian militants in the country’s east, defying warnings from Russia as commandos engaged in gunfights with men who had set up roadblocks and stormed a Ukrainian police station in Slovyansk, Ukrainian officials said.

At least one officer was killed in the operation, and several were injured, as were four locals, the officials said. Russian news media and residents here disputed that account, saying the Ukrainian forces had only briefly engaged one checkpoint.

In either case, the central government in Kiev has turned to force to try to restore its authority in the east, a course of action that the Russian government has repeatedly warned against. With tens of thousands of Russian troops massed along Ukraine’s eastern border near Donetsk, Western leaders have worried that Moscow might use unrest in Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking areas as a pretext for an invasion — even though the violence had been solely caused by the pro-Russian side.

Both governments intensified their statements on Sunday. Ukraine’s interim president, Oleksandr V. Turchinov, issued another ultimatum, saying separatists should vacate occupied buildings by Monday or face a “large-scale antiterrorist operation” that will include the Ukrainian military. And Russia claimed that the Ukrainian government was cracking down at the behest of American and European officials.

It's game over. Since last week the new government could not rally local cops. The ethnic Russians see this weakness and are moving on to take all of their regions under their control. Government is trying to respond with force but it lacks coordination and resources. If they push this further they going to have an invasion in western Ukraine from Russian side.

UN Security Council to meet tonight...

Donetsk, Ukraine (CNN) -- The U.N. Security Council has called an urgent, previously unscheduled meeting Sunday night to discuss the worsening situation in Ukraine.

The delegation from Luxembourg tweeted the "urgent consultations" were requested by Russia and would be held at 8 p.m. ET.

The meeting comes the same day that Ukraine acting President Oleksandr Turchynov issued a promise of amnesty for pro-Russia separatists in eastern Ukraine but warned that anyone who continues to support the takeover of government buildings would be held responsible for their actions.

The acting President added a warning to "terrorists" who did not comply, saying they would be subject to an army anti-terrorism operation if they did not comply by 2 a.m. ET Monday. Similar deadlines have been set and allowed to pass with no consequence.

"We'll not allow any repetition of the Crimean scenario in the east of Ukraine. I have signed a decree that would allow those who did not shoot at our officers to lay down their arms and leave the occupied buildings by Monday morning without fear of being prosecuted," he told a national television audience, according to a CNN translation.

Should be interesting.

I can't see how war will be interesting, but Ukraine decides its fate tomorrow.1.If Kiev does not carry out the threat city after city will rebel and they will probably start to cannibalize between them self's over who is to blame. If they attack and spill blood even if the win that region will be independent within a few years and there will be resentment for decades ,if they are pushed back then back to 1.

And those comments on the article are stupid beyond comparison.
I'm glad Ukraine is fighting back. Force Putin into international isolation if he decides to invade. The alternative is that Kiev consolidates its power in the eastern regions which will in turn hopefully result in a more economically stable country joining the EU down the road.

Who the hell does he think that Ukraine is the USA.They can't print their currency so they can pay off every corrupt politician + to be enough left so the plebs not to rebel. They left the SSSR with a developed industry, plenty of land for agriculture, most natural resources,a major port city and 50% below market energy cost, today they are famous for being the place where prostitutes come from. And the EU told them they could not join in the next few DECADES,not that they could even fulfill even the slightest of the conditions that are needed.

Imagine my surprise.

They have a population of 46 million people yet every one of those protests/government overthrows had their numbers in the thousands mostly even hundreds.I have read that some groups are fighting for joining the EU and NATO and some for Russia yet I never read someone fighting for Ukraine.A "country" no one cares about let alone is prepared to die for .

They had like 10 unsuccessful mobilizations ,they can't even find enough men for their paid "national guard".

Rebels in the town of Slaviansk, which was expected on Monday to be the focus of a broad government "anti-terrorist" operation involving the army, issued a bold call for Russian President Vladimir Putin to help them.

Ukraine's interim president Oleksander Turchinov said on Monday the offensive would still go ahead. But in a sign of discord behind the scenes in Kiev, he sacked the state security chief in charge of the operation.

Turchinov also took a risky step to try to undercut rebels' demands by holding out the prospect of a referendum on the future shape of the Ukrainian state. He suggested a nationwide referendum could be held at the same time as a presidential election on May 25.

And so it begins...

Ukraine Launches Anti-Terrorist Operation, Four Separatists Dead

There's reports of heavy gunfire between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian government forces as the latter initiates a "full-scale anti-terrorist operation."

After a week of armed occupations of government buildings, bomb threats, and hostage takings by pro-Russian separatists, Ukraine's government announced late yesterday evening that the deadline to disarm has passed. Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov said, "Tonight an anti-terrorist operation began in the north of Donetsk [region]. It will be conducted step-by-step, responsibly, deliberately. The goal of these actions, I want to underline, is to defend the citizens of Ukraine."

Surprise! Fox News Network just had Lindsey Graham as guest on Greta, and now McCain is on O'Really. McCain wants to send US and NATO troops to the borders of Russia. No agenda there.
