Does any place in the US require a passport to vote?

I just watched a clip of Obama stating that republicans are trying to deny minorites the right to vote by requiring a passport. Is this true? I've never heard of being required to use a passport, only that it's one of several acceptable forms of ID.

No . My state requires ID , if you do not have one , they will give you one free at the license branch.Drivers licenses are not free though, just the ID. There is much more voter fraud in the US than people would like to admit . I am pretty sure though , none at the precinct where I vote .

And Indiana's voter ID law has withstood legal challenges right up to the Supreme Court.

But passports? I can't imagine any place making that a requirement. There's a lot more time, effort and cost involved in getting a passport, and that really *would* impose an undue burden.

passports are overdoing it. I think people should supply basic identification though. In most states you can commit voter fraud as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Yes but that's the whole point. That's why Obama used that lie, because it IS hard to get a passport. Nobody REQUIRES a passport to vote. It's one option out of many. But adding more options only makes it easier to vote. The difference between OR and AND is huge. Obama makes it sound like you need a driver's licence AND a passport. Not OR a passport. The problem is the voting population and the media are too dumb to understand the difference between "AND" and "OR".

Looking around, I found several states with driver's license costs in the $41-$45 range. A passport card is around $55 I think.

As others pointed out, though, many areas will help you obtain a free state-issued ID.

Edit : Found some for $10 so... $20 more for a passport than a license. I don't find that to be a catastrophic cost, and I don't see how $65 = $200 but w/e :p

State ID's are free in my home state , drivers licenses , under $25 if I recall. I see no real reason a drivers license or passport should ever exceed $10 or $20 .
