Just saw a show on Google Books that got into their project to scan every book in the world and the legal cases about copyright that is spawned. It was on Al Jazeera and should replay at midnight, EST tonight. This isn't something you can watch in the background as there are a lot of interviews in other languages with English subtitles.

One bit I found really interesting is someone recounting a discussion with the Google founders when asked, "why are you creating another search engine? Alta Vista seems to work just fine." The answer: "Oh, we aren't. We're building a AI."

A more recent Google quote is that "Google is a AI knowledge aid"

Another interesting quote was that "Google is a NGO that just happens to make money, who's business plan is to make the world a better place."

Interesting stuff!

lol, I remember when www.av.com (http://www.av.com) was THE search engine!

BTW, it looks like they've moved the cheese (via the long way) over to Yahoo:

All those search engines screwed themselves when they:
- decided to introduce paid placements
- cut deals with other companies to become part of their 'portal' site

I thought dmoz was going to be the thing, and manual-reviewed directories would be superior to search engines. But there were a lot of dmoz editors on the take. It used to be hard to get in Yahoo's directory, then they started charging $299 for a review.

google was smart to keep all that crap off their page, and when they did eventually run ads, they were separate form the real results.
