Marshals, sheriff quiet on S. Valley shooting

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office was releasing no new information Wednesday on the shooting of a man by U.S. Marshals just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday near Bridge and Sunset in Albuquerque’s South Valley.

Gilberto Angelo Serrano, 32, was wounded when deputy marshals with the U.S. Marshals Service attempted to arrest him for violating parole and other alleged crimes, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, three counts of child abuse and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to Sgt. Aaron Williamson, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, which is investigating the shooting.

Serrano was treated at a local hospital for undisclosed injuries, released and was being interviewed by detectives late Tuesday, Williamson said on the day of the shooting.

Online records from the Metropolitan Detention Center indicate that Serrano was booked at 11:54 p.m. Tuesday.

Williamson has said the sheriff’s department is heading up a multiagency investigation that includes New Mexico State Police and the Albuquerque Police Department.

Deputy U.S. Marshal James Badway, a spokesman for the agency’s New Mexico district, referred all questions to the sheriff’s office on Wednesday.

Witnesses said two unmarked SUVs pulled into the parking lot of a strip mall shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday and drove up to a green pickup truck with a matching camper. They said a woman armed with a gun and wearing civilian clothing fired one shot through the truck’s windshield, and that at least two other gunshots were fired by men who stepped out of the SUVs.

Janice Serrano, a woman at the scene who said she was Serrano’s sister, said she saw her brother being yanked out of his truck, bleeding and unarmed, and being handcuffed before receiving medical attention.

Two other witnesses said investigators took their cellphones from them after seeing them taking photos of the incident.

An amateur video posted on YouTube shows a man in a body-armor vest treating Serrano for a head wound as the victim lies just outside the truck’s driver’s-side door as an angry crowd curses at officers.

Among unanswered questions are whether Serrano was armed and why the marshals fired on him.

Fugitive shot during arrest by U.S. marshals

A man was shot as a U.S. Marshals Service task force arrested him on a fugitive warrant near Sunset Road and Bridge Boulevard in southwest Albuquerque on Tuesday morning.

The man, identified late Tuesday as Gilberto Angelo Serrano by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, was released from the hospital and was being interviewed by detectives.

BCSO said in response to a question that it couldn’t “speculate” on whether law enforcement officers shot Serrano because interviews hadn’t been completed.

Williamson would not say whether the suspect was armed or what prompted at least one task force member to shoot at him as deputy marshals attempted to arrest the man for violating parole and other alleged crimes, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, child abuse and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Janice Serrano, a woman who said she was Serrano’s sister, said she arrived on scene after hearing gunshots at her nearby home. She said she saw her brother being yanked out of his truck, bleeding and unarmed, and being handcuffed before getting medical attention.

She said the Marshals Service did not allow her to see her brother at the hospital, and she questioned why he had to be shot.

Witnesses said they saw a pair of unmarked SUVs pull into the parking lot of a strip mall after 9 a.m. and drive up to a green pickup truck.

They said they saw a woman armed with a gun in civilian clothing fire one shot through the windshield from outside the truck, followed by at least two other gunshots from men who stepped out of the SUVs.

The witnesses, including Mathew Garcia, a man who was stopped at a Sunset Drive stoplight, said the shooters did not identify themselves as law enforcement, nor could they see badges or identifying vests.

The BCSO spokesman said law enforcement officers are required to identify themselves, but he could not say whether the task force members identified themselves verbally or wore anything that would have identified them as law enforcement.

Gabriel and Barbara Valdez were waiting at a nearby methadone clinic when they saw the shooting. They said the man shot was struck at least once in the head and that they didn’t see him with a weapon. They said none of the shooters identified themselves and that the truck the man was in appeared to go into reverse just before the shooting before ending up on the east end of the parking lot.

A green truck could be seen at the scene with a passenger door open and one bullet hole in the top of the windshield. Gabriel and Barbara Valdez said investigators took their phones from them after seeing them taking pictures.

I started a thread a couple weeks ago that didn't get much traction about another ABQ police shooting.

Check out the phone camera video at the link.

Wow,Incredible!
That excerpt I posted wasn't even the whole article and there was a video a neighbor took of him getting shot multiple times within seconds of stepping out the door and making no threatening moves in the meantime.

Right down the old memory hole.
