According to an article in the Los Angeles Times, “a research and consulting firm in Cambridge, Mass., suggests global warming will trigger more crimes including murders and rapes over the next century, with social costs estimated to run as high as $115 billion.” How long before we will hear a defendant in court saying “the climate made me do it”?

A new study broadens a notion held by the earliest criminologists: Periods of higher temperatures -- on an hour-by-hour or week-to-week basis -- are likely to produce more crime.

The study by Matthew Ranson of Abt Associates, a research and consulting firm in Cambridge, Mass., suggests global warming will trigger more crimes including murders and rapes over the next century, with social costs estimated to run as high as $115 billion.

Between 2010 and 2099, climate change can be expected to cause an additional 22,000 murders, 180,000 cases of rape, 1.2 million aggravated assaults, 2.3 million simple assaults, 260,000 robberies, 1.3 million burglaries, 2.2 million cases of larceny and 580,000 cases of vehicle theft, the study published this week in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management says.

Guess they need to find a way to make the earth not be tilted on it's axis. Then the seasons won't happen anymore and they can relax.

I like how they have a future dollar figure for rapes and murders . These are such awesome scientists , LOL. I could go with a global warming, increase food production on my place. There will be no increase in murders....

There are more murders within the summer season, which could correlate with people being outside more, interacting more, and thus, possibly conflicting more, than else wise.

I suppose this may explain much of the murdering be done in Iraq, or Yemen....

A more reasonable hypothesis is that while the heat may agitate a few, and that while more may be out, the underlying condition exacerbating the problem is the shear hopelessness many are born unto. Of course, much of this is to do with the legal tender laws, with the Federal Reserve et. al devaluing the currency, and with a strangling regulatory bureaucracy enacting laws on whim and enforcing authoritarian edicts (as well as their equally unproductive counterparts, the police).

I sarcastically post a 'shocking' to many of these threads because is it really shocking that people whose sole livelihood relies on a justification for their unproductivity does something to justify it?

Oh, and not to mention, the drug war.

Ha! That reminds me of the stat you hear about Social Security being fully funded thru 2061 or whatever it is. Is that July of 2061 or August of 2061?

Of course SS is actually broke now, but that's a whole other topic.

they probably estimate social costs based on how crime and reactionary actions are taken today.

a cost of a murder is not just the cost of a person dying, as tragic as it may be, but the investigation, conviction, imprisonment, that are expected to go along with it.

22,000 over 90 years? sorry, that's only 250 a year. Easily what we do in any war.
