Sigh. This is one of those cases where I'm probably going to end up arguing on behalf of Harry Reid. Before I get into the details, I would remind everyone that Ron Paul was constantly under fire for putting his family on the payroll.

Ok> here's the lowdown: The FEC asked Harry Reid about some campaign expenditures he made for "holiday gifts." Here's what the letter says:

Itemized disbursements must include a brief statement or description of why each disbursement was made. Please amend Schedule B supporting Line 17 of your report to clarify the following description: "holiday gifts." For further guidance regarding acceptable purposes of disbursement, please refer to 11 CFR 104.3(b)(4)(i)(A).

Additional clarification regarding inadequate purposes of disbursement published in the Federal Register is available on the FEC website at
www.fec.gov/law/policy/purposeofdisbursement/inadequate_purpose_list_350 (http://www.fec.gov/law/policy/purposeofdisbursement/inadequate_purpose_list_350) 7.pdf. A non-exhaustive list of acceptable purposes is also available on the FEC website at http://www.fec.gov/rad/pacs/documents/ExamplesofAdequatePurposes.pdf.

So, while giving holiday gifts to big donors is kind of a gray area, if they had tied it to "Fundraising" it would have probably flown under the radar. But that's not the issue the media is focusing on. Apparently Reid got the gifts from an on-line jewelry store called "Ryan Elisabeth," which was owned by his grandaughter, and has been missing from the web entirely since sometime in 2012.

I'll put some pictures of the jewelry in question at the end of this, but....while I think it's pretty absurd to believe that Senator Harry Reid bought crap jewelry to give to his biggest donors as a holiday gift, it is on the burden of the state to prove it didn't happen.

Here's some of the pictures, Buzzfeed has more:

Harry does not understand all the fuss, and is just going to pay the money back. (From his own pocket?)

Meh in the grand scheme there are much more important issues to worry about. Reid has done a lot worse than this.

Well, that was pretty insulting. I don't recall walking around telling you what is important to worry about.

But if what you say is true, then get those instances in the headlines and create a media uproar generating negative press for the Democrat Senate Majority Leader, like this incident is doing.

I promise I'll post them as soon as I see them.

I get the feeling someone here goes out of their way to feel insulted. And I'm pretty insulted by that. Who do I sue?

Really? You've got under 300 posts, you popped in just to defend a Democrat who is the subject of a child porn investigation, and now you've decided to come over here and derail this thread too. With a personal attack?

You are certainly an invaluable member to the liberty movement and the forum discussions. We are very happy that you are here. Enjoy your stay.

Personal attack? I'm reminded of Anais Nin-

"We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are."

I could eat your lunch but, I'll take the high road. Good day.

Reid did it because he could.

Sure. People wonder how people people go into Congress living a relatively modest life, and come out 50 years later a multi-millionaire?

Oh, now 2 neg reps? Ouch, there partner!

Was it the fact that I don't trust FBI investigations that pee'd ya off or that I commented on your claim that 69630 sullied your honor in his/her post?

So, let's see- Getting offended over nothing. Lashing out without cause. Sending snide comments in PMs.
...Are you sure you're not a Democrat?

This is like trying to pin a Jaywalking on a serial killer. Reid should burn, but... meh. I can't bring myself to care about this. Seems unimportant, really.

All the same, it should be read, along with all of his many crimes against us, as the flesh is crackling in the flame. We'll include jaywalking too, if he was guilty of it.

Nothing directly related to this but, do you guys ever look at the age of these men and ask yourself, "WTF"? Harry Reid, John McCain, Dianne Feinstein, these cats are in their late 70s and 80s.

When I think of people that age, I think of kindly old gents in a retirement center, my papaw, gramma, and people like that.
How the hell do they not reach a certain age and begin the process of self-evaluation?

The article says he gave them to supporters and staffers, not "biggest" donors. I could see him buying a bunch of crap jewelry to give to volunteers, phonebankers, etc.

With that said, I dont' see whats wrong with what he did here.
