I think that the whole story is not being reported (shocking, I know) and the program will be a nightmare in short order.

Homelessness has been an increasing concern this last decade. Fresno, for example, is starting to look like Los Angeles; yet with a fraction of the population, now at around 500,000 with over 3,131 homeless and 2,536 existing without any form of shelter. They pose a constant issue and challenge for law enforcement, ambulance services, local business and property owners, and subsequently hospitals, mental health facilities, the county jails and court for minor infraction after minor infraction, failure to appear or register warrants, etc.

The reference to ‘Maslow’s hierarchy of needs’ is very relevant, the notion being alluded to within the article it is on par with local law enforcement busting repeat offenders for minor and victimless vice crimes without ever providing them any other real or meaningful alternatives (with exception to becoming a confidential informant—laugh), which could perhaps begin to redirect their life towards a more positive direction.

Where do I sign up?

No, seriously I want muh free housing.

How do I get in on this? And how much in food stamps do I get in Utah for a single male? Can I get free viagra so I can satisfy all my welfare honeys at once? Well, the last one might be possible, but one can dream. At least I get my Obamaphone so I can call each of them up for every night of the week.

There was a thread about this earlier.

It was an interesting discussion but like so many RPF threads, got derailed into a shit storm of religion and useless arguments that had nothing to do with the original topic.

The Libertarian in me hates the idea of using tax payer money to give free housing to people. Also I wonder how is this different than, "THE PROJECTS" which create crime and crack dens like other cities across across the country and become full of abuse. How will this prevent abuse?

Another part of me knows these homeless people are getting the shit beat out of them and harassed by cops, and are just being rotated into and out of prison for victimless crimes and just pumping up the Prison Industrial Complex and churning $$$ for the fucking PIC, and that costs a lot more than any free rent. It also could potentially save some of these mentally ill people from getting beaten or murdered by psychotic cops, if they have a home to go to instead of wandering the streets. Maybe I'm soft for seeing Kelly Thomas bludgeoned to death for no goddamn reason, I still can't get that video out of my head months later.

I'm a bit torn on this one, if it's actually a huge savings and reduces money going toward the PIC, and is actually helping people get their lives back together, I'm not opposed to it. Yet I'm cynical and won't be surprised if there's rampant abuse and some unethical landlords are raping the gov't coffers who happen to be giving kickbacks to some state politicians; and it's nothing more than a circle jerk of money flowing back into the politicians pockets with an entire neighborhood turning into a crime infested crack den with horrific worse than 3rd world living conditions that a poor few unfortunate people are trapped in.

But the PIC creates jobs with work release, and initially creates jobs by reducing the size of workforce, its called win / win. We need more laws and thank State they are a coming.

I think I'm moving to UT for free housing.
