View Full Version : It starts young: Black preschoolers taught "school-to-prison"

WASHINGTON (AP) — Black students are more likely to be suspended from U.S. public schools — even as tiny preschoolers.

The racial disparities in American education, from access to high-level classes and experienced teachers to discipline, were highlighted in a report released Friday by the Education Department's civil rights arm.

The suspensions — and disparities — begin at the earliest grades.

Black children represent about 18 percent of children in preschool programs in schools, but they make up almost half of the preschoolers suspended more than once, the report said. Six percent of the nation's districts with preschools reported suspending at least one preschool child.

Advocates long have said get-tough suspension and arrest policies in schools have contributed to a "school-to-prison" pipeline that snags minority students, but much of the emphasis has been on middle school and high school policies. This was the first time the department reported data on preschool discipline.

Earlier this year, the Obama administration issued guidance encouraging schools to abandon what it described as overly zealous discipline policies that send students to court instead of the principal's office. But even before the announcement, school districts have been adjusting policies that disproportionately affect minority students.

Overall, the data show that black students of all ages are suspended and expelled at a rate that's three times higher than that of white children. Even as boys receive more than two-thirds of suspensions, black girls are suspended at higher rates than girls of any other race or most boys.

The data doesn't explain why the disparities exist or why the students were suspended.

"It is clear that the United States has a great distance to go to meet our goal of providing opportunities for every student to succeed," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a statement.

"This critical report shows that racial disparities in school discipline policies are not only well documented among older students, but actually begin during preschool," Attorney General Eric Holder said. "Every data point represents a life impacted and a future potentially diverted or derailed. This administration is moving aggressively to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline in order to ensure that all of our young people have equal educational opportunities."

Nationally, 1 million children were served in public preschool programs, with about 60 percent of districts offering preschool during the 2011-2012 school year, according to the data. The data show nearly 5,000 preschoolers were suspended once. At least 2,500 were suspended more than once.

Hispanic children made up nearly one-third of all preschoolers, but they made up 25 percent of the preschoolers suspended once and 20 percent of preschoolers suspended more than once.

Clearly, it's Whitey's fault.

Yes, just what we need: more government.

Yes, just what we need: more government.

The whole process is a pretty elegant trap: Propose more government as the solution, and when the problem gets worse, propose more government as the solution. Lather, rinse, repeat.

"By the year...2015 they gonna have 70% of our community locked up. I'm talking about blacks gonna be locked up within they community. It's gonna be like it was in Warsaw...ghetto."

The black community has been suffering in so many ways, especially today, that it's actually pretty plain to see why something like this would happen. Many black children are left without a father figure and their mother doesn't take very good care of them, so they aren't raised right in the first place. They are bombarded from all sides by contradicting information, both from their mother and possibly uncles or siblings, and are surrounded by a violent and confrontational culture. This can lead to less than favorable attitude when they go to school, even as early as preschool.

Of course, the school system is also jacked up and by design will punish any little outburst by any student of any race. Their zero tolerance policies lead them to a place where they do not treat children or young adults as if they can make mistakes and need to learn from them, but instead treat them as if they knew what they were doing was wrong and they deserve to be punished and have their life ruined. They also have turned from education to memorization and don't properly address a lack of student interest in curriculum. There is very little room for having different interests in the school system. Sure, they push the whole extracurricular activities thing and do offer limited choice such as art classes and the like, but they still force every student through the same strainer with the same fucked up education standards. It doesn't help that black kids and young adults are berated over and over again with how being intelligent is a minus and not a plus. You add those two systems together and you have a situation where black students are just punished at a ridiculous rate.

The thing is, the system was built this way on purpose. You want to see what it's like for a population to be enslaved, look at black people in the United States. The Government has them by the balls and it's a sad sight to see. The Prisons are more than happen that the Government has established a pipeline between schools and prisons, it fills them with abject glee. They're raising a race of people to just go to prison and it's disgusting.

We've already seen that they aren't satisfied yet though. They're moving onto their favored race, whites, and they won't stop until everyone who isn't a government dick-licker is either locked up or bowing at their feet.

Fuck em.

You deserve a +rep for posting this. I like Lupe Fiasco, he does some great music and is one of the leading rap artists who talks about issues like this. More power to you and more power to him.

I just noticed this story on Yahoo. It's not connected to the racial aspect, but it's yet another issue of the zero tolerance kapos punishing good behavior:
Student takes razor from classmate hurting himself, gets suspended and faces expulsion [UPDATED]

Exactly this.

What has been done to the black community by government was just a beta test.

It's now being rolled out for everybody.

These growing trends (metioned in above replies) suck.
What on Earth can we do about it?

We really need to be making a lot more noise about it around people we know in real life. Make more friends in real life, and email a story a day to everyone you know personally. Create memes like, "Over in North Korea...<insert incident from the US here>" Get politically involved in party politics, citizen groups, etc. to become more visible and harder to ignore. All of this unfortunately requires a lot more effort than posting on a forum, and the latter suggestions require having your life together enough that you can cope with it all and don't get drowned in ad hominem attacks.

To quit putting non-violent drug users and sellers in the penitentiary would be a good place to start.
