MAN who spent nearly 26 years on death row in Louisiana walked free of prison hours after a judge approved the state's motion to vacate the man's murder conviction in the 1983 killing of a jeweller.

Glenn Ford, 64, had been on death row since August 1988 in connection with the death of 56-year-old Isadore Rozeman, a jeweller and watchmaker for whom Ford had done occasional yard work. Ford had always denied killing Rozeman.

Ford walked out the maximum security prison at Angola on Tuesday afternoon, said Pam Laborde, a spokeswoman for Louisiana's Department of Public Safety and Corrections.

Asked as he walked away from the prison gates about his release, Ford told WAFB-TV, "It feels good; my mind is going in all kind of directions. It feels good."

So when can I expect the prosecutor, cops, witnesses and judge who put this man in jail to stand trial?

What's innocent got to do with it? He was convicted fair and square by a jury of his peers. Plus he got free room, board and medical care, etc. for 26 years all at taxpayers' expense.

Why I'm quickly turning against the death penalty.

If the justice system was fair in any way, shape, or form, there wouldn't be all these non-violent offenders in there that are costing so much money and the state could afford to keep violent offenders in prison until they either serve their sentence, rot, or are cleared of their charges.

Just can't stomach thinking that an innocent person gets fucked over so badly they pay with their life.

I'm against the death penalty for the simple reason that governments are not trustworthy.

The state has maximum liability of, It calls for payments of $US25,000 ($27,700) per year of wrongful incarceration up to a maximum of $US250,000, plus up to $US80,000 for loss of "life opportunities".

Another example of why the death penalty is bad. Any "mistakes" cannot be corrected.

They already took that guy's life. He's going to have a hard time trying to stay functional.

Knowing what we all know, there is no way that you could support capital punishment.

It's an AP story that was picked up on the wire. Just like The UK's Daily Mail picks up a lot of US news.

I suppose it just makes me ashamed of my country.

There. I said it. I'm embarrassed by and ashamed of my countrymen - and our system of justice.
