North Las Vegas police said an officer's encounter with a homeless man grew violent, leading to a fatal shooting early Monday morning.

According to NLVPD Public Information Officer Chrissie Coon, the uniformed officer was patrolling the area of Woodard Street and Tonopah Avenue about 1 a.m. when he saw a man walking in a crosswalk. Coon said the officer informed dispatchers he was going to stop the person.

According to Coon, the encounter with the 38-year-old homeless man grew violent.

Within minutes of the encounter, the officer called dispatchers to say there had been shots fired and medical assistance was needed, according to police.

Police said the person shot by the officer died at the scene. There were no injuries to the officer.

In case anyone was worried.

An investigation revealed the officer stopped his patrol vehicle along the sidewalk and attempted to approach the man on foot. Police said the man was being uncooperative and he began to back way from the officer towards the backyard of an abandoned residence.

It wasn't until the officer walked towards the man that the incident escalated, police said.

Coon said a knife was recovered from the scene.

"At some point, the suspect presented a knife. The officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect multiple times," Coon said.

Police said the entire incident took place within 2 1/2 minutes.

Police said they target the area because of its high number of abandoned homes and buildings.

"It's becoming a public safety danger to have people in and around these house. Code enforcement is coming out and boarding up these houses. The homeless are coming in and taking those boards down, and you know there's electrical hazards and things of that nature," said Coon.

And cops?

The incident marked the first officer-involved shooting for North Las Vegas police this year.

I suppose there is something in ^^^^ that.

This optimistic side of me sometimes wonders if authors write, "There were no injuries to the officer" to remind people that the guy the cop killed wasn't actually being violent enough to hurt the cop in the first place...i.e. as a subtle hint, "So why exactly did Officer Koward fear for his life again?" It's useful information to have for that purpose at least. My cynical side says you guys are right though, and it's just the author giving a lesson in copsucking.

I wish they would make up their damn minds, I thought it was NOT walking in a crosswalk ("jaywalking") that was supposed to be a reason for them to kill you ?

No. Only folks like you and I think that way. For the Boobus it is to re-emphasis that the officers reaction was justified and that it ensured officer safety.

C'mon Sean, you've been at this long enough...

It has nothing to do with any of that.

They'll kill you whenever, wherever and for whatever reason they want, or no reason at all.

Any encounter with these psychotic lunatics could be your last seconds on this mortal coil, if Officer Friendly wants it that way.

Seems like having them patrol the area is more dangerous to people than letting them live in the abandoned buildings.

Homeless, Houseless, the Poor, and Unemployed... these people tarnish the sparkle of Sin City and tourism. The money coming into the city is mostly foreign now(cheap dollar) and they don't want their tourism and spenders to decline if there's rags and tags roaming the Vegas strip, casinos, and malls.

Anyone who threatens the city-state revenue machine are fair sport of murder by the cop/judiciary/state.

No mundane is going to give a bad image to Las Vegas and rest assure, the Fascist corporate media seals the deal with their nightly programming to the sheep. Hasn't anyone notice across the country, your local news media outlets have increased the nightly police blotter propaganda? Of course it's all 'rubberstamped' by so-called pundits and experts to convince the public of the evil dead victim.

Happens everywhere. The homeless are an easy target for a pack of uncaring wild animals.

copsucking.
Is this yours? Man, I've been trying to think of something clever to encapsulate this concept for years.
It's perfect.

A vagabond is the easiest of all targets. No family to put up a fuss, no cell phone video to record the abuse and no organized political group to put pressure on the ruling class.

Walking Away from a Cop: A New Capital Offense

[Crime scene photo at the link]

A North Vegas Police Officer shot and killed a 38-year-old man for the supposed crime of walking away from a cop.

David L. Robinson was shot in the head by an unidentified North Las Vegas cop in the backyard of an abandoned home. He had been accosted by the officer while trying to cross the street. According to NLVPD propaganda officer Chrissie Coon, Robinson was “uncooperative” and “backed away” from the armed stranger, which will make it unusually difficult to claim that the victim acted “aggressively” toward the government functionary who killed him.

The killer has been placed on paid vacation while the department and the police union work on a cover story to justify his inevitable exoneration.

Turn away from the murder and go back to your PS4s, Smell-O-Visions, and endless sex parties.

The only thing you need to do is that the officer is fine and will be back on the street in no time.

Fuck em.
