GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Businessman Brian Ellis unleashed his first television advertisement against U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, calling a single 2012 abortion vote "very wrong."

The 30-second spot attacks Amash, R-Cascade Township, as being the only Michigan Republican voting against the 2012 Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act, which reportedly would have imprisoned doctors for performing abortions based solely on gender.

...

"Amash voted to allow gender selection abortions to continue," the ad states. "Right to Life called Amash's vote 'shameful' and 'pro-abortion.' They're right. Amash's vote was very wrong."

In response, Amash's campaign called the ad "despicable, disgusting and beyond the pale" in the run up to the August primary election.

"West Michigan expects more — even from desperate politicians like Brian Ellis," Amash's spokesman, Will Adams, said in an emailed statement. "Amash is 100 percent pro-life and opposes abortion."

...

"The legislation at issue would not have made a single abortion illegal," Adams said. "Instead, it would have created a thought crime, which conservatives oppose."

That seems like an effective ad for a GOP primary.

The bill was introduced to provide pro-life cover for RINOs (like Ellis), so they can produce ads like this to manipulate voters. I almost wish he voted for it since it was meaningless either way, but I'm glad he stuck to his principles.

That must be a really socially conservative if this is what passes for a major issue there. My guess this will blow over.

Amash's comments on the bill from 2012:

When did Republicans start supporting hate-crime legislation? Hate-crime bills, like H R 3541, are apparently okay if they have to do with a baby's gender but not okay if they have to do with a person's skin color or sexual orientation. Or maybe they're okay if it's an election year and Republicans are trying to make the President look like he doesn't care about women. I am appalled and outraged that we would take an issue as sacred as life and use it so cynically as a political weapon.

Republicans, and especially conservatives, should oppose abortion. Period. H R 3541 criminalizes the MOTIVE for getting an abortion. In other words, it keeps all abortions legal except those obtained for the "wrong" reasons. But ALL abortions are wrong. And criminalizing motive makes this simply another hate crime. Literally the only difference between a legal and an illegal abortion under the bill is whether the "abortion is sought based on the sex or gender of the child."

The bill also shockingly makes it a crime for a medical or mental health professional NOT to turn in someone who they SUSPECT of having committed this thought crime. They can be thrown into prison for a year if they don't "report known or suspected violations . . . to appropriate law enforcement authorities." Free societies do not criminalize inaction.

I'm pro-life, and I think all abortion should be illegal. But Congress should not criminalize thought. And this bill won't stop a single abortion if it becomes law. Every person seeking an abortion simply will sign a form stating her motive is not the sex of the baby. Those of us who are pro-life should demand more from Congress. While we waste time on stuff like this, genuine legislation to protect life is ignored.

Well, abortion is still a big issue for those on the right. Whether it makes a dent remains to be seen. It'd be nice to know what Amash's support in Michigan is like as opposed to outside of the state. I mean, is there enough of a movement that wants him replaced?

That ad will make a dent. It was brutal, but now even I hate him; when I love him.

Just hope that bs doesn't have much play time . That ad is video terrorism.

Of course that sneaky Amash had to sneak something in there somewhere... He would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for that progressive Ellis, and his meddling establishment cronies.

Its too bad that Amash doesn't keep a log of his voting record/amendments, with explanations. You know, something that the whole world can see. If he did, he could easily put an a-hole establishment candidate like Ellis in his place.

Err...Wait?

I voted yes on H R 1797, Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. The Equal Protection Clause prohibits a state from "deny[ing] to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws" and empowers Congress "to enforce, by appropriate legislation" the equal protection of all such persons. This bill prohibits abortion of an unborn child who is 20 weeks old or older. There is substantial medical evidence that an unborn child of that age feels pain when he or she is aborted. The government's primary role is to secure the life and liberty of all persons within its jurisdiction, and unborn children especially need protection because they are unable to defend themselves. It passed 228-196.

No taxpayer should be forced to pay for an abortion. No doctor should be forced to perform an abortion against his or her will. Tonight, the House acted to protect taxpayers, medical personnel, and—most important—the lives of the unborn.

I fully support legislation that will strengthen existing federal laws that ban taxpayer-funded abortions. It is simply unconscionable that our government would force anyone to pay for the taking of innocent human life.

H Con Res 36 defunds Planned Parenthood but leaves all other abortion providers funded. Today, I offered an amendment to prohibit federal funding of ALL private non-hospital entities that perform abortions. The GOP-led Rules Committee refused to allow a vote on my amendment, which would stop more abortions and provide for a single, uniform law. I cannot support legislation that treats similar entities differently.

AMENDMENT TO H. CON. RES. 36 OFFERED BY MR. AMASH OF MICHIGAN

Abortion is still a big issue, period. It obviously continues to drive judicial appointments made by both major parties (somehow we're not supposed to notice how Democratic administrations appoint pro-choice judge, after pro-choice judge, after pro-choice judge to the bench). It remains a constant wedge issue in election campaigns, when both sides don't want to address other big issues. And I maintain legal abortion has coarsened the culture morally, thus making it easier for massive debt, torture, no-due process detention, belligerent militarism ,and other disasters to be tolerated by a once moral people.

No, but Broun voted against another pro life bill because it contained an exception for rape and incest.

Brian Ellis is an establishment tool. If that knucklehead is the best they RINOs can do, then we have bigger fish to fry. Amash also has a pretty big war chest, and we will come to his defense if the race even looks like it is getting close.

posted on Justin's facebook:

From Connie Lemmink, Justin Amash for Congress:

Character matters in our elected officials.

It’s a difficult thing to judge from afar. But sometimes in the middle of a campaign, voters can get a glimpse of who the candidates are deep down.

In West Michigan, we had one of those "character moments" on Monday. That's when Justin's establishment opponent, Brian Ellis, unveiled his first TV ad.

The ad is despicable, disgusting, beyond the pale -- and false.

Justin is a leading defender of the right to life. He has voted more than a dozen times to prohibit abortion and cut off its funding. His wife Kara and he have been long-time supporters of prolife groups before Justin ever considered running for office. And he’s proudly prolife as a representative.

You’re welcome to read more about the thought-crime bill that Justin voted against on Justin’s Facebook Page [http://facebook.com/repjustinamash/posts/401622453210500], where he personally explains every vote he has taken in Congress. He even made a follow-up post [http://facebook.com/repjustinamash/posts/401807929858619] around the time of the vote to provide some more thoughts on the right to life.

The saddest part about all of this is that Brian Ellis knows better -- and yet he’s still willing to push the lie.

What kind of man would stoop to that level?

What does that say about his character? The representative he aspires to be? The campaign he intends to run?

Desperate campaigns like his usually don’t last long before they’re relegated to a footnote on Wikipedia. But because Brian Ellis has pledged to pour in $1 million of his own money, we should expect a steady stream of vicious smears.

You know where Justin stands on life, on federal spending, on civil liberties. And when you have a question about a particular vote, you know that you can find his reasoning in plain view, online.

Not every voter is so plugged in. That’s why it’s crucial that we fight back NOW.

We’re working on material at this moment to combat Brian Ellis’s lies. But we can’t get that material in the hands of voters without significant new campaign resources.

This is serious. We’re fighting a challenger who stands for all that’s wrong with our politics. Brian Ellis wants to go to Washington to prove that he’s an Important Person. He can’t wait to spend your money on corporate welfare for his political class friends, and he’s willing to run a campaign that lacks integrity to do it.

Time is running short. Brian Ellis has bought air time for the next two weeks. Justin's campaign hasn't done the same yet. But with your help, we'll be able to go on the offense before it's too late.

Can you join us in combating the Ellis smear campaign by giving $35, $50, $100, $250, or $500 today?

We’re ready for this fight. Let’s get going.
