Karl Rove tries to connect Tea Party groups to Texas primary

While it’s true that these two candidates tried to capitalize on the Tea Party in their quixotic campaigns to unseat Cornyn, none of the groups that Rove referenced — Senate Conservatives Fund, FreedomWorks, and the Club for Growth — endorsed in the Republican primary in Texas. Not a single one. Heritage Action doesn’t endorse candidates in federal races.
Rove knows that, but he’s trying to undermine these groups by speciously implying that they backed Cornyn’s opponents.
This behavior from Rove is par for the course. You may remember that American Crossroads, his super PAC, launched a new project last year — Conservative Victory Project — to help establishment candidates fight off insurgent conservatives. That particular effort didn’t get very far.
FreedomWorks fired back at Rove, calling his credibility into question.
“Aside from the fact that Rove has his facts wrong, it’s interesting to watch him try to forecast with any credibility how anyone is going to perform this year, considering his electoral track record in 2012,” Jackie Bodnar, media coordinator at FreedomWorks, told United Liberty. ”Karl Rove’s super PAC spent over $300 million in 2012, and ended the year with about eleven out of thirteen Senate candidates and about nine out of sixteen House candidates losing.”
“Respectfully, we don’t need the architect of ‘compassionate conservatism’ trying to impose discipline in the GOP primary process, and frankly, trying to squash the diversity of ideas and open dialogue that come with it,” she added.
