On Thursday, a state Senate panel voted to advance legislation that would legalize the cultivation of industrial hemp in South Carolina.

Senator Yancey McGill, subcommittee chairman, was quick to point out during the opening statements of the Senate agriculture subcommittee meeting that this particular legislation “has nothing to do with legalizing marijuana.”

The proposed bill’s language makes it abundantly clear that industrial hemp is genetically different from the marijuana plants that are bred to produce high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In addition, if successful, the bill dictates the removal of industrial hemp from South Carolina’s current classification of marijuana.

A spokeswoman for the South Carolina Department of Agriculture proclaimed that her governmental branch isn’t ready to join the discussion as of yet and refrained from commenting during Thursday’s subcommittee meeting.

Senator Greg Hembree reportedly contacted what he referred to as “exceedingly conservative” friends in law enforcement in Kentucky to hear any concerns they might have with the prospect of industrial hemp cultivation in their republic. Apparently his associates told him they didn’t anticipate any trouble. “They satisfied whatever concerns I had,” Senator Hembree affirmed.

Yea South Carolina!
