COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- Investigators have released their final report on a crash that killed six family members and injured a police officer in Perry Township in the autumn of 2013.
The release of the report comes after a four-month probe into the deadly October 18, 2013 crash in which an Upper Arlington police cruiser slammed into the driver side of a Toyota Corolla at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Fishinger Road.
The crash killed Eid Badi Shahad, 39, his wife Entisar W. Hameed, 31, and their four daughters, Shuaa Badi, 16, Amna Badi, 14, Ekbal Badi, 12 and Lina Badi, 2. Upper Arlington Officer Shawn Paynter suffered a head injury, and has since returned to the department.
The crash occurred minutes after Paynter began driving to a McDonald's on Henderson Road in response to a report of an armed robbery. Using dashboard video from Paynter's cruiser, investigators determined that Paynter was approaching Fishinger Road while traveling on Riverside Drive at an estimated speed of 86 mph when the Badis' Corolla passed under a red light before stopping in the intersection.
Paynter applied the brakes after the Corolla became visible, slowing the cruiser to an estimated speed of 49 mph at the time of impact. The last available dashboard image of the traffic light over Riverside Drive showed a yellow signal as the cruiser entered the intersection immediately before striking the Corolla.
The video indicates that the cruiser veered right as it approached the intersection, a move that Paynter explained to investigators as an attempt to avoid the Corolla, which he believed would continue to move forward, but instead came to an abrupt stop.
The lights and sirens on Paynter's cruiser were in operation when the crash occurred, according to the report.
The Badi family members were returning home from a celebration of the Eid al-Adha holiday at a friend's house when they were killed. None of them were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

After the results of the crash investigation were released, Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien announced that he has found "no basis to file criminal or traffic charges arising from this incident " and stated his belief that Paynter was acting "properly within the law" at the time of the crash.
