Girl Scout sells cookies outside SF pot clinic

A business-savvy Girl Scout in San Francisco had to call for back-up cookies just 45 minutes after setting up shop in an inspired location: outside a medical marijuana clinic.

In two hours on Monday, 13-year-old Danielle Lei sold 117 boxes of cookies to customers who may have been expecting to have the munchies. Her mother, who accompanied her and asked the Green Cross clinic for permission, says that's dozens more boxes than she managed to sell outside a Safeway in an identical time period the next day.

"It's no secret that cannabis is a powerful appetite stimulant, so we knew this would be a very beneficial endeavor for the girls," a Green Cross worker tells Mashable (http://mashable.com/2014/02/20/girl-scout-cookies-marijuana/?utm_campaign=Mash-Prod-RSS-Feedburner-All-Partial&utm_cid=Mash-Prod-RSS-Feedburner-All-Partial&utm_medium=feed&utm_source=rss&utm_reader=feedly)http://global.fncstatic.com/static/v/all/img/external-link.png.

"It's all about location, and what better place to sell Girl Scout cookies than outside a medical cannabis collective?" Indeed; Danielle will reportedly be back with more cookies tomorrow.

A Girl Scouts of Northern California spokeswoman says the organization has no problem with sales outside any legitimate business. In Colorado, however, where pot has been fully legalized, Girl Scouts are banned from selling cookies outside marijuana outlets or liquor stores, the San Francisco Chronicle (http://blog.sfgate.com/stew/2014/02/20/genius-girl-scout-sells-cookies-outside-pot-club/)http://global.fncstatic.com/static/v/all/img/external-link.png reports.

How is peddling cookies any more or less legal than peddling lemonade?

Seems they haven't taken into account the cotton mouth aspect.

The cookies are in a sealed box. Perhaps if the lemonade was prepared in a factory and sold in sealed bottles, there wouldn't be a problem with lemonade stands.

Well, we got around that in school. We had these boxes with chocolate covered peanuts. We'd open up each box, take a few peanuts out, and glue back the box shut. To top it off, I returned a couple of cases without selling a damn one, so somebody got those back.

The stepped up "secure" packaging after the early eighties Tylenol incident was little more than a feel good measure. It might have prevented some misfit kid from spitting in your peanut butter, but these packages are really not that secure. Anybody intent on tampering could certainly do so.

Another illusion of our sense of well-being.

Although I've bought some of their cookies this year, I can't really figure out what the girl scout org is good for other than raising money by selling cookies.

I think it brings out the entrepreneur in the little ones, they say that Girl Scouts are more likely to be successful than non scouts. I don't really know though.

I just bought a whole mess of them myself from the two girls a few houses down. They're probably around 8 and 9. I don't really eat them but we know them and they spend near the entirety of the summer and spring running through my flower beds catching butterflies with their nets and whatnot and don't run the streets. Of course, they stomp all over my flowers but it's OK, I suppose. They grow back. Anyhow...because I know that they aren't in the Girl Scouts, I did just do a once over on the web site because I was wondering how they came about aquiring their cookie stash. There isn't really an "About" page. I never really figured it out but I don't really care enough to fiddle with it.

Here's what I found that seemed like a simple enough once over...

Those thin mints do look like they might be worth a try though. I can smell the mint through the box.

When I was a kid the kids did the fundraising. Nowadays parents solicit coworkers for most of the sales. My parents never solicited anyone for any of my school fund raisers. Fundraisers are a waste. Such little goes to the cause. Forget the cookies all together and just have the girl scouts have an annual donation drive. I bet they would make out better off and not have to work as hard.

Update: Colorado Girl Scouts Not Allowed To Sell Cookies Outside Pot Shops

DENVER (CBS4) – Customers of some medical marijuana shops are finding they don’t have to go far if they have a case of the munchies since Girl Scouts are selling cookies right outside the front door.

A Girl Scout in San Francisco sold about 117 boxes in just two hours outside a medical marijuana shop.

But those in Colorado will have to go a lot further for cookies because Girl Scouts here are keeping their distance.

Katherine Kneeland is a Girl Scout troop leader and said she would never ask her troop to make more green, by dipping into a different kind of green.
“I don’t think I’d want my daughter to set-up a booth in front of a dispensary,” said Kneeland.

Although pot shops are becoming a big market in the state, it’s one the Girl Scouts of Colorado don’t want to get into.

They issued a statement that reads, “We recognize these are legitimate businesses, but we don’t feel they are an appropriate place for girls to be selling cookies in Colorado.”

However, reaction to this statement is split.

“If it’s safe go for it. I’m sure they’ll sell a lot of freaking cookies because people will get high and want to eat food,” said a Denver resident.

“I think whatever they feel is right is what they should do,” said Denver resident Amanda Legos, who buys cookies every year.

Kneeland hopes the Girl Scout’s idea in California doesn’t catch on and change tradition.

“It brings something to light, something to mind, and will start a discussion,” Kneeland said.

Aside from pot shops, the Girl Scouts of Colorado said other places that are off limits are bars, strip clubs, casinos, and liquor stores.

Two questions:

1) Are the girls actually forbidden from selling in front of pot shops? What if they just stand at the store next door?
2) How is it even tracked where they sell cookies?

It's not like people smoke pot at the clinics. I don't see why sales would be higher there than any place else.
