Woman outraged after trooper allegedly shot her dog

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT)- An Eastern Kentucky woman is outraged after she allegedly watched a Kentucky State Police trooper shoot her dog right in front of her.

But was the trooper defending himself or being careless?

A blood stain outside of Becky Pelfrey’s home in West Van Lear is a reminder of what she watch unfold early Monday morning.

“It was pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. Just five shots right in a row,” Pelfrey said.

She says she woke up to a Kentucky State Police trooper and a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy knocking on her door at 1:30 in the morning to serve a warrant for someone that no longer lives at her house.

Two other KSP troopers pulled up just as her 4 year old Great Dane named Boss got out.

“He ran past a sheriff’s deputy and a state trooper that was on the porch. He went down the steps on my sidewalk and he was out maybe five seconds, and then I heard gunfire,” Pelfrey said, “I looked out and Boss was lying in the road. And I said, ‘Did you shoot my dog?’ and [the trooper] said, ‘Yes ma’am I did, he was charging at me.’”

But Pelfrey questions the troopers’ claim, asking why he felt the need to shoot five times, if he was standing in the road and when Boss walked right by the deputy and trooper standing at her front door.

“They could have tazed him, they could have pepper sprayed him, I know they carry batons. They could have taken other precautions instead of drawing your weapon and firing,” Pelfrey added.

Boss returned home from the vet Wednesday after being treated for four gunshot wounds. The vet says Boss could lose one of his legs.

We reached out to Kentucky State Police for their side of the story, they declined to comment.

Another case where the Cops screw up and take zero responsibility for their actions.

Shooting the Dog IS standard procedure.

Does anyone else see the problem with this? Pelfrey is being far too deferential ...
Either the dog was a menace or it wasn't. If it was, then why shouldn't it have been shot?
And if it wasn't, then why should it be okay to do any of those other things (rather than shooting it)?

Of course she is...she is talking about the enforcement class, criticism of which must always be mild, calm and deferential...or else.

Check out the dog on their Facebook page. Pretty much tells the pigs were lying. Again.

Angers me to no end.

I wonder if the police are shooting dogs in Kiev?

Get out your pots and pans or you'll be getting your guns...

Every Marmaduke comic should include him getting blasted by the police.

Where is PETA in all of this?

They are too busy staging events to try to damage the reputations of those PETA hates to actually do something to protect animals.

If a neighbor or solicitor had done this, I'm sure she would be livid and the neighbor would be in jail. But I can't blame her either. Some stranger just blasted her dog several times right in front of her face and the shooter is loose on the street. I think the message sent was clear.

Anger a Knight of the Realm? Peasant women don't fare well in such situations....
