[Letter received from Al C4L]

No matter the intentions of good people, devastating changes could be made to the Constitution.

Alabama state Senators Arthur Orr and Trip Pittman are pushing to call a convention to amend the Constitution.

You would have no control over who attends that convention to represent you and whether or not they would act within the bounds of the rules of a convention.

Do Senators Orr and Pittman think a constitutional convention can force politicians to stop ignoring the Constitution?

Gun bans.

Free speech ďzones.Ē

NSA spying.

Indefinite detention.

These are just a few examples of how politicians are currently ignoring the Constitution.

How will passing a constitutional amendment that requires them to follow the Constitution help?

When politicians ignore the Constitution with impunity, passing another amendment isnít going to change that.

Thatís pretty obvious to you and me.

And thatís just one reason why Alabama Campaign for Liberty opposes an Article V Convention.

So why have State Senators Arthur Orr and Trip Pittman introduced bills calling for an Article V Convention to amend the Constitution?

Sometimes, good amendments are necessary. But the problem with a convention is, you donít know what amendments will ultimately result at its end, and you donít know who will wield the power.

For example, the state of Hawaii has already issued a call for an Article V Convention.

But they want the convention so they can declare ObamaCare constitutional!

With the immense power wielded by todayís special interests, it could easily happen!

The result of a convention depends on what delegates go - and who has power and influence over them.

So, just who is supporting a call for a constitutional convention?

In addition to a handful of conservative organizations, literally hundreds of progressive organizations (http://paracom.paramountcommunication.com/ct/17717851:18951565485:m:1:540252415:8256FFC0775DD62 83945EC54BDC22646:r), such as Sierra Club, Code Pink, Alliance for Progressive Values, MoveOn, and ďOccupy,Ē have been pushing for a convention since 2009!

So whom do you think Alabama would send to a convention?

Who would pick the delegates?

How would that be decided?

Do you trust the powerful special interests that control our state? Do you trust the hundreds of progressive organizations calling for an Article V Convention to do the right thing and rein in the federal government?

Do you want them deciding who is going to write amendments to your Constitution?

The Convention of 1787 was called to revise the Articles of Confederation - not to write a new Constitution.

We are blessed that out of the 1787 Convention, our founders gave us our current Constitution with its limits on government power.

They had just fought a war against the virtually unlimited power of the British crown and were very interested in making sure government power was limited to protect the people.

Despite that fact, the Articles of Confederation were still scrapped to strengthen the power of the federal government.

Thatís right.

They threw out the ďold and outdatedĒ Articles of Confederation and wrote a brand new Constitution . . .

. . . even though the delegates were called and directed to only revise the Articles of Confederation!

Can you imagine what they might have written if 50% of the convention delegates came from the liberals you see today?

Additionally, the delegates even changed the legal method of ratifying those changes.

We'll repeat that because it is vitally important!

The legal method of ratification was changed during the convention.

The Articles of Confederation required unanimous ratification from every state in order to be changed.

When our founders met to revise the Articles of Confederation, they immediately went into a secretive ďcommittee of the whole.Ē

No one knew what they were doing.

Thatís why at the end of the convention Mrs. Powell had to ask Benjamin Franklin what kind of government they were getting.

Franklin famously replied, ďA republic, if you can keep it.Ē

But here is the point.

The Articles of Confederation required the 13 states to unanimously ratify any amendments.

But when the Convention ended, only 9 of 13 states were required to ratify the new Constitution, which would then take effect among the ratifying states.

They changed the legal method of ratification to lower the standard.

Today, thereís no guarantee we could stop ratification of anything bad that comes out of a convention.

The Articles of Confederation legally bound the states to require a unanimous vote of the states to change it.

They simply ignored it!

Can you imagine what that would mean today?

Every special interest in the nation will spend billions to make sure any convention will remove limitations on government.

Our only precedent clearly shows the delegates can completely ignore instructions they are given and change ratification requirements at will.

A convention is extremely dangerous.

Especially today!

SB199 and SB200, the Alabama bills calling for a convention, already have nine cosponsors each.

SB199 and SB200 must be stopped.

In Liberty,

Alabama Campaign for Liberty

P.S. Remember, according to our history of conventions, the delegates elected to the convention could wield unlimited power to propose revisions to the existing Constitution, and no matter the intentions of good people, it would likely be impossible to keep devastating changes from being made to our Constitution.
