...or How I Ended Up in Solitary After Calling 911 for Help


I live in a new gilded age in a golden city. But sometimes the cracks show, even here. The façade crumbles and you find yourself naked, in solitary confinement, in a wretched, feces-stained prison.

How? As a result of my efforts to help injured bicyclists by calling 911, I was, in short order: separated from my friend, violently tackled, arrested, taken to county jail, stripped and left in a solitary cell. I am writing this story because, if it could happen to me, it could happen to you, and I feel the need to do something to help prevent this brutality from propagating.


In the hope that it might help some other idealistic, nerdy people from following me down that rabbit hole, I conclude with several public service announcements:

Don’t call 911. Obviously, there are exceptions, but the sad lesson is, there are fewer than you’d think.

Call Lyft to take you to the hospital. (Worked well when I broke my elbow.)

Take such incidents to trial, where justice isn’t veiled by the POBAR. It’s not a matter of litigious vindictiveness. It’s just the only available way. The SF Office of Citizen Complaints is not a valid alternative.

Consider wearing a video camera at all times. It has been shown that when police wear cameras and are aware of being filmed, it moderates their behavior. As self reports of the need to use force decrease, so do complaints.

We already know calling the police is a bad idea for just about anything. Calling 911 is the same thing. 911 is one of the many insidious items that is reducing liberty. There should be no such thing.

There was a seemingly suspicious guy in our area awhile back. I went outside (daylight) to see if I could find out anything. Someone else call the law. Turns out the guy was disabled and looking for food. I was not there, but the cop frisked the guy. Highly likely that it was unnecessary, especially with the cops mild version of events. Surprised the guy did not get beaten or tased.

Never call the police. Police also come out with 911.

How exactly did he do it to himself? He called 911, he stayed with the victim as instructed until help arrived. He want to make sure she was ok being in an accident earlier. (seems like a normal human interaction) He than get tackled to the ground for (not moving away fast enough)?? Has the shit beat out of him. Gets hauled to jail. Is pissed he's there (a normal reaction if you're innocent) Tries to communicate, get taken to solitary confinement and stripped naked and set to shiver for hours.

So exactly where did he do wrong? Was it calling 911 in the first place? The desire to get his cellphone back from the victim who was holding it? The desire to make sure she got picked up, dusted off and sent to a hospital? Really dude, where did he do this to himself? I'm all about calling people out when they spread anti-cop propaganda...which does happen here sometimes. But in this case it sure sounds like this guy was in the right.

I’m all too familiar with the density of crime in our neighborhood, having experienced car break-ins, bike theft, and vandalism repeatedly.

All of those are things that the SF Police will not investigate.

I was standing 15 feet from the scene beside Officer Kaur, a stocky female of South Asian complexion. She turned to me and abruptly said that I was not needed as a witness and should leave immediately.

This Officer was the one who choose to do him in. Apparently he did not respect her authoritay, and she made him pay.

What the story doesn't mention at all is what he was taken in for. From the description, she probably took him in on a drunk and disorderly (her lying), which means spending the night in the drunk tank. Everything was auto-pilot from there on out. From his description of everything, it sounds like the guy is far too talkative for his own good. He was treated like just another one of the crazies once the Officer threw him into the system. His story and how he ended up there was not of interest to anyone. He was a prisoner, and that's all he was.

If he wanted his cellphone back he should have asked a police officer to retrieve it for him. There were government employees there so there was no need for him to Make Sure of anything. Did you read the part where he was trying to see a doctor so that he could instigate a riot? I didn't, but it could have happened. He even complained about area codes. It's true what the cops said about him, "I think he’s going to be a problem."

This is what he said to them, "As someone who addressed the staff as “Sir”, spoke slowly and deliberately, and constructed logical arguments." What kind of a person does that? A troublemaker, obviously. He got put in solitary because he was acting crazy, “I want to see a doctor. I WANT TO SEE A DOCTOR.”

In March of 2010 a Tulare man, Robert Olivo died shortly after being shot with a Taser and handcuffed by Tulare Police.
In January of 2007 a Fresno man, Pete Madrid died after being shot with a Taser several times by a Fresno Police officer.
In August of 2004 a Fresno man, Michael Sanders died after being shot with a Fresno Police Taser.
In addition to deaths there have been lawsuits. In June of 2010 an off duty Merced County Sheriff's Deputy was shot with a Taser fired by Chowchilla Police. Domingo Leyro was awarded nearly $150 thousand in damages after filing suit in Federal Court,
The weapons work by stunning the victim with 50 thousand volts of electricity. The goal is to subdue, not kill. But statistics compiled by Amnesty International link Tasers to nearly 400 hundred deaths between 2001 and 2008.
