UPDATE:

RUSTON, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Lincoln Parish Sheriff's Office has released the following press release regarding the shooting death of Johnny Rico Richardson.

It states: "On Friday, February 7, 2014, at approximately 1:00 PM, Lincoln Parish Sheriff's Deputies, while on routine duty arrived at East Side Mini-Mart, located at the intersection of South Farmerville Street and Martin Luther King Driver, in Ruston, Louisiana. The deputies came into contact with a group of individuals in the parking lot of the convenience store. One of those individuals immediately began running from the deputy who immediately began pursuit on foot. The deputy clearly identified himself as a law enforcement officer and ordered the suspect to stop. The suspect refused to stop. As the pursuit continued, the suspect suddenly stopped, turned toward the deputy and pointed a weapon at him. When met with this lethal threat, the deputy fired multiple shots striking the armed suspect who was taken to North Louisiana Medical Center for treatment. The suspect, Johnny Rico Richardson, 23 years of age, was later pronounced dead. The weapon that was in the possession of the suspect was recovered at the scene.

No Lincoln Parish Sheriff Deputies were injured in the incident. Lincoln Parish Sheriff, Mike Stone describes this as an unfortunate incident. Sheriff Stone went on to say that preliminary investigation indicates that the officer involved acted appropriately under the circumstances when faced with an immediate threat of death or bodily harm to himself. However, in accordance with standard law enforcement procedure, the deputy involved, whose name is being withheld at this time, has been placed on paid administrative leave.

As is standard operating procedure, Louisiana State Police has been called upon to continue the investigation."

UPDATE:

RUSTON, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The sister of Johnny Rico Richardson has confirmed that Richardson has died from gunshots from a Lincoln Parish Sheriff Deputy's gun.

Laquita Poe said that her brother had a criminal past, but is unsure why sheriff officials would have approached Richardson on Friday.

Employees at the Citgo gas station say that the incident started outside of the store, but the shooting occurred across the street in an empty lot.

KNOE 8 News' request for surveillance footage from the station has been denied because the station's owner was out of town.
