Whistleblower cop Frank Serpico remembers the night he took a bullet to the face — even if the NYPD continues to ignore it.

One day after the 43rd anniversary of his near-fatal shooting, Serpico, 77, said he has yet receive his long-delayed Medal of Honor certificate, which typically accompanies the medal.

Serpico was given the NYPD’s highest award, the Medal of Honor, in 1972. But the medal wasn’t given at a ceremony; it was dispensed over a counter top, he recalled. In a statement, he said was tired of “waiting for the NYPD to overcome their pettiness and animosity.”

Serpico has said in the past the medal was not for his corruption-busting efforts — but given because he was “stupid enough to have been shot in the face.”

He maintains that his fellow cops on the Brooklyn buy-and-bust operation never made a 10-13 — “officer down” — call.

On another note...is Frank Serpico "The Most Interesting Man in the World?"

Trashing Serpico - Walter Block
For me the best chapter of Walter Block's "Defending the Undefendable" is the chapter on the Dishonest Cop. Listen to it at http://mises.org/media/3519

NEver read the above blog before but that post will do. You can read the chapter here:

He could be governor, congressman or a senator... if he wants to. Imagine that. That would be worthy sequel to his original movie.... Imagine him roaming halls of congress and looking at politicians, lobbyists and other corrupt scum.

While I enjoy reading Walter Block I'd have to say that in this particular instance it takes some mental gymnastics to evoke Godwin's law w/ regard to Serpico.

My stepfather's cousin. No, I never met him, but Victor made no effort to hide his respect for what he did.

His other cousins were mostly made mafiosi. They were an interesting bunch of guys. They loved me. :)
