Senate Sends Farm Bill to Obama
WASHINGTON February 4, 2014 (AP)

The sweeping farm bill that Congress sent to President Obama Tuesday has something for almost everyone, from the nation's 47 million food stamp recipients to Southern peanut growers, Midwest corn farmers and the maple syrup industry in the Northeast.

After years of setbacks, the Senate on Tuesday sent the nearly $100 billion-a-year measure to President Barack Obama, who is expected to sign it. The Senate passed the bill 68-32 after House passage last week.

The bill provides a financial cushion for farmers who face unpredictable weather and market conditions, along with subsidies for rural communities and environmentally-sensitive land. But the bulk of its cost is for the food stamp program, which aids 1 in 7 Americans.

The joke is on the taxpayers.

...the farm bill beefs up a different kind of subsidy -- a subsidy for crop insurance. This is complex, but in short, the government will make crop insurance cheaper and it will pay out some benefits at lower levels than previously. That will make farming less risky for some. But it transfers that risk to the federal government, which could be even more on tap if crop prices plummet or if a disaster hits. Good for farmers, risky for the deficit.
...
The farm bill decides which crops the U.S. government wants to encourage or protect. It gives incentives to grow more of them. The most subsidized crops in this (and in most farm bills of the past) are the so-called "row crops," things like wheat, soy, and the king of American agriculture, corn.
...
At the same time, this bill adds a few new winners to the list of subsidized row crops, among them sushi rice. If sushi rice prices fall too low, the government will now make up the difference.

At least the sushi rice farmers will have security. I'm sure that's a huge relief.

I don't eat sushi so I will just help out the people who do. And those insurance companies will need some cash too. Money for everyone!

I'm looking around the "conservative" sites. Townhall has 13 comments on their story, Breitbart hasn't reported it as far as I can tell. It's all about the coke commercial, 1050 comments and counting. A bunch of frigging idiots throwing insults back and forth over nothing.

Look at the shiny thing!

Breitbart has a few stories, not original, so not a lot of comments.

I didn't see that video. I looked around and came up empty so I put farm bill in the search and just plain missed that one.
