A convicted quadruple-murderer is on the loose this morning after escaping from custody in Michigan and abducting a woman, corrections officials told ABC News.

Officials say Michael David Elliot escaped from the Ionia Correctional Facility Sunday night after donning a white kitchen worker uniform and sneaking through a hole in a fence around 6 p.m. or 7 p.m.

Michigan Department of Corrections Director Dan Heyns said this morning that Elliot, who was serving four life sentences for the murders of four people in 1993, obtained the kitchen uniform to use as part of his escape plan. Heyns said no one is believed to have helped Elliot in or out of prison, and did not say how he was able to cut a hole in the fence.

"That appears to be how [Elliot] escaped - through a hole he created at the bottom of the fence," Russ Marlan, spokesman for the Corrections Department, said in an email to ABC News.

Elliot then made his way on foot to Ionia, Mich., where he used a box cutter or knife to carjack and abduct a woman, and then drove her 2004 red Jeep Liberty to Elkhart, Ind.

The woman escaped and called 911 when the pair pulled over at a gas station in Elkhart and Elliot fled.
