View Full Version : Man adopted cats only so he could serve them as dinner. 12 months in jail for it?

Well, this one’s horrifying. The New York Daily News ispointing people’s attention to a story from Italian newspaper Il Mattino. Apparently a 50-year-old man in the northern region of Lombardy in Italy was adopting cats from nearby shelters only so he could cook them and serve them as meals.

It appears that the unidentified man took in about 15 cats, all around 3-years-old, black, and “meaty.” He would then kill the cats and serve them as food to friends at dinner. It is unclear whether his friends knew what they were eating.

It appears the shelters became suspicious when the man refused to have any of the cats come in for checkups. Lorenzo Croce, president of the Italian animal welfare orgnization, Associazione Italiana Difesa Animali ed Ambiente (AIDAA), told Il Mattino that it was first suspected that the man might have been a Satanist and was performing some form of sacrifice. Instead, after a raid of his home, they found out the terrible truth.

The Daily News notes that he was arrested and charged with animal abuse. If convicted, the married father will face up to 12 months in jail.

Study: People have more sympathy for abused puppies than for abused adult humans (http://www.livescience.com/38800-abused-puppies-sympathy-adult-victims.html)

For whatever reason, people just get crazy over dogs and cats. So much so, that you'll see a lot more reaction to a thread entitled 'Man Tortures Cat' than to one called 'Man Tortures Innocent Little Kid'.

Because people are just plain dumb, at least in reference to the masses. The fact that Justin Beiber having troubles is more important to these people than NSA spying for Pete's Sake.

Not implying one can't have sympathy for an abused animal, but you'd think a human being would be a bit more important than that.

What struck me was the "raid on the home" part. And this was justified, how? Because the animal shelters were suspicious??? Then just don't adopt anymore animals to him, fool. Whatever judge would give a warrant for a raid on this basis is totally whacked.

And I am an animal lover.

He'd get a hell of a lot worse if he was caught torturing and killing kids, so I don't see your point. Society obviously values the kids more.

As for why people tend to care more about animals than human beings, unless you actually know someone most people don't really care a whit for anyone that is out of their sphere of concern. Cats and dogs can't defend themselves and people see them as members of their family, they just do whatever they do and that's all there is to them.

What if it was a cow or pig? That would be bacon/hamburger right. Do certain animals have more rights that others?

Seems so. There's no real rhyme or reason to it; why cows or pigs can be eaten but Americans get really angry over the idea of eating dogs, cats or horses. I would say "it's because they're cute", but people seem to be able to raise rabbits for food without too much blowback. Maybe that is because rabbits are, along with being a pet, a game animal, legally able to be hunted, whereas dogs and cats obviously are not.

Also: please spare me the "it's because they're intelligent" argument. Pigs are one of the smartest animals on Earth, smarter than all of dogs/cats/horses, but few in the U.S. seem to have any qualms over them being turned into bacon, ham and pork chops.

So was it really abuse? Or was the killing quick and painless. Also curious what the basis of the raid was.

Now I'm curious as to what the animals taste like. Probably kinda like chicken ( just like every other non-beef, non-pork critter ).

Of course pigs have more rights than other animals.

People would rather that they put the cats down from lack of demand. I don't think I'd eat a cat on purpose but to each their own.

This was an issue in KC MO in the 80's. Elderly poor collecting free cats from the ads in the newspapers for food. I'll bet this goes on all across the country a lot more than we want to know about.

Guy's an idiot.

It cost to "adopt" critters, pellets are under a penny.

If he's got an affinity for cats he needs a pellet gun.

Then he could diversify, squirrels, birds etc....

Shelter people: You can't adopt our cats and then kill and eat them.
Guy: What's the alternative?
Shelter people: You let us kill them and then just throw away their uneaten carcasses.

Yeah, but in cities there's the ricochet problem if you miss a shot. Tazer's probably a better way to go.
