Every day, Transportation Security Officers interact with nearly two million travelers across the United States with a single goal in mind – ensuring the safety of the traveling public.

TSA had a busy year in 2013, screening 638,705,790 passengers in 2013 (over 1,700,000 per day), which is 1,123,668 more passengers than last year.

Sadly, this year marked the first incident where a TSA officer, Gerardo I. Hernandez, was killed in the line of duty at Los Angeles International Airport.

In many ways, Transportation Security Officers are the public face of our nation’s security. It is difficult work, requiring patience, stamina, and great attention to detail. It requires extensive training and constant vigilance. This year’s tragic incident reminds us that being on the frontline also comes with a great risk. It is a risk that the men and women of TSA undertake willingly knowing that in doing so they are serving a higher cause, and a noble one – protecting the men and women of the United States every day.

We wanted to share with you examples of the continued vigilance of TSA officers in protecting our nation’s transportation systems, including some of the most unusual items TSA caught at the checkpoints this year.

1,813 firearms were discovered in carry-on bags at checkpoints across the country, averaging nearly five firearms per day. Of those, 1,477 (81%) were loaded. Firearms were intercepted at a total of 205 airports with Atlanta (ATL) on top of the list for the most firearms intercepted (111) in 2013.

There was a 16.5% increase (257) in firearm discoveries from last year’s total of 1,556.

That 2 searches for every American. Since I haven't experienced one I guess I'll have to give thanks to AF for taking one for the team. LOL.

Strangely enough, the last time I flied (August 2013), I told them I wanted to opt out, as I usually tell them. It's become a habit by now.

The TSA agent looked at me and said, "Opt out of what?" I looked over at the screening section, and realized that what I had to walk through was now only a metal detector.

Apparently now they're only making you go through the rapescan if you get randomly selected for a rapescan. At that point you can then choose the gropedown instead.

The number is artificially high, Danke keeps going to the back of the line to get searched again.

Was the big black broad with three chins and a mustache the one "searching" him?

Yes, that's why I always request a private screening.

Depends on the airport. Chicago Midway has lines of metal detectors and lines for Rapescan. Philly was all Rapescan and you had to opt out. Orlando had Rapescan. Las Vegas had a mixture last time I was there. New Orleans had the Rapescan but one was busted so one line had detectors only. Houston had the Rapescan so you had to opt out.

It all depends. I usually take a minute to survey the lines and determine if the metal detector option is available. If not, I opt out and get groped.

Danke just makes sure he gets back his share of taxdollars by fully tapping the government-subsidied foreplay to prep himself for the mile-high club. Legs spread-eagled is a position any libertarian can agree with.

1,813/638705790 = 0.00000283855 or 0.000283855% of all searches found a firearm, or 1 firearm found per 352292.217319 searches.

Just throwing that out there.

ahem, that kind of check was done way before anything called the TSA.
I would love to know more about who was found carrying these in their luggage. I'm guessing they're standup citizens. Otherwise, imagine the field day the press and varying special interests would have in propagandizing the lights out of this data point.

Can they or any global freedom agency give breakdown how many people had to take their shoes off last year?
Would people continue to be forced to remove their shoes for travelling till year 3013 or will it be done for ever/till end times?

by the way, has anyone experienced TSA pre-check?

No shoes off
No belt off
No jackets off
only cell phone out of the pockets
No porn scanner
etc.
basically, pre-TSA procedure. Sanity begins to return to America's airports.
