Guess What Group is Getting Food Stamps at an Alarming Rate

Food stamp rolls have been growing rapidly. But what many may not realize is that participation among able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) has been skyrocketing compared to the total number of participants. That’s just one reason Congress should reform the food stamp program in the farm bill now under consideration. In just four years, the number of able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) on the food stamp rolls skyrocketed by over 2 million. While overall food stamp use grew by 53 percent between Fiscal Year 2007 and Fiscal Year 2010 (from about 26 million to nearly 40 million), it more than doubled among able-bodied adults without dependents during this time–from 1.7 million to 3.9 million–an increase of roughly 127 percent. Food stamp spending today is roughly $80 billion, double what it was in Fiscal Year 2008.

Magida, a 30-year-old art school graduate, had been installing museum exhibits for a living until the recession caused arts funding -- and her usual gigs -- to dry up. She applied for food stamps last summer, and since then she's used her $150 in monthly benefits for things like fresh produce, raw honey and fresh-squeezed juices from markets near her house in the neighborhood of Hampden, and soy meat alternatives and gourmet ice cream from a Whole Foods a few miles away.

"I'm eating better than I ever have before," she told me. "Even with food stamps, it's not like I'm living large, but it helps."

Mak, 31, grew up in Westchester, graduated from the University of Chicago and toiled in publishing in New York during his 20s before moving to Baltimore last year with a meager part-time blogging job and prospects for little else. About half of his friends in Baltimore have been getting food stamps since the economy toppled, so he decided to give it a try; to his delight, he qualified for $200 a month.

"I'm sort of a foodie, and I'm not going to do the 'living off ramen' thing," he said, fondly remembering a recent meal he'd prepared of roasted rabbit with butter, tarragon and sweet potatoes. "I used to think that you could only get processed food and government cheese on food stamps, but it's great that you can get anything." Suppress serious rebellion by slowly impoverishing the populace to the point where all of their time is devoted to the basics of living and they have no time to consider philosophy and politics. Before long, you have a nation of poor that lacks the vision that our forefathers possessed.

Next up they will give out free cable television. They will be able to devote a lot of time to politics. Officially approved, false left-right, red herring filled propaganda 24x7.

Free porn is way better than cable TV, this way they stay the hell away from politics and current events. I don't have any proof but I think all this free porn websites who never get taken down like the movie pirating sites like movie2k.com are all funded by the CIA.

You keep the men inside the house wanking off to a buffet of porn and you postpone the revolution another 20yrs.

Why work?

In 39 states it pays more to be on welfare than to have an $8 an hour job.
That is, without having to put anytime into actually working.

Hm.... Bum around, play videogames, play with myself, watch tv, and have just enough to survive.
OR work a full time job, be exhausted, and have just enough to survive.

Life is full of difficult choices.

I remember my mom telling me about the time she applied for food stamps as a single mother. The government employee told her she should quit her job to qualify.
(She didn't.)

That is NOT a reason for Congress to reform the program.

That is the reason (the real reason - not the public-relations reason) for the program in the first place: to "buy people off."

IOW: "ABAWD" expansion = more voters with a vested interest in the status quo ...

It will be a special new government TV service. It will be minimal. Just the big 3 (ABC, NBC, CBS), the Weather channel, CNN, MSNBC, ESPN, Bravo, MTV and 50 pron channels.

I keep avoiding the math, but I would really like to add up everything taken from me since I began working... and get it all back with adjustments for inflation & scams over the years.

This ABAWD would take back no more than was taken from me -not one cent.

Correction to the bolded text: "... but after taxes, there is not enough left to survive on."

This is typically very true if ones Housing is also paid for. Section 8 Housing, for example...

Wasnt it like 1 in 7 last year, and now its 1 in 5? Are they trying to get everyone on food stamps as a trick to have singlepayer foodcare? lmao

There is not a single person in the country who needs food stamps. If you cant gather food or money in some fashion, you are weak and nature should take care of you. People talk about this living wage crap. You can live anywhere in the country on $7.25 an hour under Obamacare part time (29 hours). Thats $210 a week, $841 a month. Naturally, people will cry about how rent costs more than that everywhere. Well congratulation, you are an idiot. There is a thing called subletting. If you check out craigslist, you can rent a room anywhere in the country, with cash for under $500 a month. Examples? You got it: New York (http://newyork.craigslist.org/search/roo?zoomToPosting=&catAbb=roo&query=&minAsk=&maxAsk=500&excats=), San Francisco (http://sfbay.craigslist.org/search/roo?zoomToPosting=&catAbb=roo&query=&minAsk=&maxAsk=500&excats=), Seattle (http://seattle.craigslist.org/search/roo?zoomToPosting=&catAbb=roo&query=&minAsk=&maxAsk=500&excats=).

Now that housing is covered, you can move on to food. You can eat decently on $10 a week with a little preparation. If you up that even more, you get more options. There are even people who pride themselves on gourmet constructions with very low budgets. And then there are LOADS of events and free food offerings, especially in college towns. Oh and it helps to find religion. Churches, synagogues, mosques, etc will all be willing to help with ANYTHING, even finding a meal here and there to supplement you.

From there, use your imagination. I know for a fact that I will NEVER need food stamps or welfare. Charity, maybe, but I honestly doubt it. I actually want to try out sometime starting from scratch, with either no money or very little money, and proving that its actually possible to get out being poor (as opposed to poverty, which does not exist in America, go to Africa to see poverty). Food stamp takers are just lazy, uncreative, and/or stupid.

The problem is that knowing how to economize is a skill that many people have forgotten and lost over the years. Why use your mind being creative when you can just apply for food stamps and section 8.

Not to be picky, but none of those are actually in the City/County of San Francisco. Suburbs aren't the same as the actual city. And many of those listings have other purposes other than just "renting".

Here's one that's real cheap:
