Cops bloodied an 84-year-old man and put him in the hospital Sunday when he jaywalked at an Upper West Side intersection and didn’t appear to understand their orders to stop, witnesses said.

Kang Wong was strolling north on Broadway and crossing 96th Street at around 5 p.m., when an officer told him to halt because he had walked against the light.

Police were targeting jaywalkers in the area following the third pedestrian fatality this month around West 96th Street.

Wong, who lives a block away, appeared to not understand the cop, the witnesses said.

“The guy didn’t seem to speak English. The cop walked him over to the Citibank” near the northeast corner of 96th and Broadway, said one witness, Ian King, a Fordham University law student.

“[The officer] stood him up against the wall and was trying to write him a ticket. The man didn’t seem to understand, and he started walking away.

“The cop tried to pull him back, and that’s when he began to struggle with the cop,” said King, 24. “As soon as he pushed the cop, it was like cops started running in from everywhere.”

Wong was left bleeding and dazed with cuts to his face.

This kind of stuff and the busybodies that advocate for such measures makes me absolutely sick.

"The violence unfolded in front of several news reporters, who had been at the intersection documenting an accident that killed Upper West Side pedestrian Samantha Lee 12 hours earlier.

After Lee’s death, police resorted to the old-school tactic of writing up pedestrians for jaywalking at $250 a pop.

“Everyone does it. Heck, the cops do it,” said Emily Skeggs, 23, who was ticketed for illegally crossing the street.

Mayor de Blasio’s spokesman, Phil Walzak, said Sunday, “We won’t sit by while lives are lost and families are torn apart. These latest crashes underscore the urgent need to make our streets safer, which is why we are moving decisively to enact ‘Vision Zero’.”"

In case you don't know vision zero is a plan by the NY authorities to make zero pedestrian traffic deaths. Which is absolutely ridiculous, you can never completely eliminate such incidents. But you can increase police state measures and crackdown on "criminal" jaywalkers while people who commit real aggressions (AKA real crimes) have fewer cops to worry about. Insanity.

De Blasio's explanation for the ticket orgy is that a third person died in a car-pedestrian accident earlier this month. I guess rather than wait for a random car to take you out if you're a dumbass and step in front of a car, the preferable thing is to have the pigs put you in the hospital. And take some cash from you while they're at it. Everybody wins that way!

There is a HUGE difference between committing a crime (which involves an aggression against people or property, like rape, murder, theft, fraud, assault etc) and breaking the law (which involves breaking an edict of the ruling class in which there is often no victim, like jaywalking, consuming pot, selling alcohol on Sundays, or a woman driving a car in Saudi Arabia etc).

99.9999% of people do not understand this critically important distinction.

Are the cops ok? They should get at least a month paid leave.

I wish people could get their head around statistics. 3 pedestrian deaths is such an astronomically low number. Consider that you're 20x more likely to die from a lightning strike. How many people were killed by cops last year? 8000? Let's work on THAT problem.

Never say never 'cause the government could kill almost everybody, or just exterminate all pedestrians, or kill all drivers to reach their goal.

I doubt that he "ignored" them, it's more likely he didn't hear them, couldn't understand what they wanted, etc. Like the guy in Fla who supposedly "ignored" cops in a park and got his dog shot as a result.

I think most anybody knows that just ignoring or walking away from a cop isn't going to do you any good, and may even get you kidnapped, beaten, or killed. Plenty of deaf people have gotten a "tune up" from cops who flew into a rage upon thinking they were being "ignored."

Of course it would be nice if the tax ticks wouldn't do that, and would maybe consider that the person didn't hear their "commands" before flying into a rage, but why should they when they can just do whatever they want with no consequences?

I love the fact that the Mayor is proud of keeping the streets safe from accidents by beating the shit out of old people for walking in the streets. Im sure the old man feels happy the police protected and served him.

So you protect people by beating the shit out of them? That's your idea of safety Mr. Mayor?

And who can blame the friendly officers, they are just doing what they are trained. Glad they were able to keep the old man safe from those dangerous cars. He should thank them heroes.

Jaywalking isn't illegal in most Asian countries. Instead common sense comes into play; unlike when American police are involved. It's all about revenue and authority.

William Grigg @ LRC: http://www.lewrockwell.com/lrc-blog/for-american-police-criminal-violence-is-routine/

For American Police, Criminal Violence Is Routine

Police, we are told, play an indispensable role in securing public safety. This assumes that public safety is somehow enhanced by the presence of people who claim a license to commit aggressive violence, and whose first priority in dealing with the public is to secure submission, rather than to provide protection.

Kang Wong (http://nypost.com/2014/01/19/cops-beat-elderly-man-after-he-jaywalked/) is an 84-year-old New York resident who doesn’t understand English. Late in the afternoon on January 19, Wong was crossing the street when a police officer, believing the elderly man was jaywalking, ordered him to stop.

Because of the language barrier, Wong didn’t immediately respond. The officer escorted him to a nearby bank and attempted to write a ticket. Still not understanding what was happening, Wong started to walk away. The officer seized the octogenarian, who tried to shove the stranger’s hands away. That provoked intervention by several other officers, who beat the confused man bloody and arrested him.

A spokesman for Mayor de Blasio blithely defended the gang-beating as the product of solicitude for the safety of Wong and other citizens – part of a “Vision Zero” initiative intended to “make our streets safer.” The New York Post offered a more clear-eyed assessment, pointing out that the tragic death of a pedestrian a few hours earlier gave the police a pretext to resume “the old-school tactic of writing up pedestrians for jaywalking at $250 a pop.”

The befuddled old man’s reaction to the opportunistic violence of the officious revenue farmer who had detained him gave the police an opportunity to file multiple charges against the victim, including resisting arrest, obstruction, and disorderly conduct (none of which is an actual crime, of course).

A few weeks ago, 64-year-old Oklahoma resident Pearl Pearson (http://www.pearlpearson.com/), who is deaf and diabetic (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/15/pearl-pearson-police-brutality_n_4603445.html), was stopped by a state trooper for leaving the scene of a minor accident. Despite the fact that Pearson’s vehicle had a large sign explaining his hearing impairment, the trooper barked orders that the driver show his hands and leave his vehicle. Outraged that the elderly man didn’t immediately obey orders he couldn’t hear or understand, two officers – Eric Foster and Kelton Hayes – beat him for seven minutes (http://kfor.com/2014/01/13/traffic-stop-involving-deaf-man-under-investigation-ohp-troopers-suspended/), then arrested him for resisting arrest.

Pearson – whose son and son-in-law are police officers – required hospitalization for his injuries. By that that time, it should have been obvious even to the cerebrally deprived people employed as police that the elderly man was deaf. Yet they didn’t bother to provide him with an interpreter (http://jonathanturley.org/2014/01/17/oklahoma-highway-police-accused-of-beating-elderly-deaf-man-for-failing-to-respond-to-oral-commands/#more-74648).

In America, such unwarranted, barbaric police violence is routine. It’s doubtful that this can be said of any other country.

What a pathetic and well trained heard depicted in that photograph..

Literally dozens of "people" standing around with their thumbs in their asses as an old man gets beaten.

Who'll be first to proclaim; "But they documented the offense with their hand-held digital recorders" ?

The disconnect from reality is sickening!

Fucking ridiculous. These bastards have nothing better to do than hound citizens minding their own business because they need to meet some quota or even out of sheer boredom. They're just itching to exercise their State-given authority on the unsuspecting. The biggest gang problem in America is the police. I see these assholes jaywalking all the time to the local Dunkin' Donuts. I can't even...
