Published January 19, 2014FoxNews.com

KABUL, Afghanistan – Three Americans were among 21 killed in a Taliban attack Friday on a Kabul restaurant popular with foreigners and affluent Afghans, the deadliest violence against foreign civilians in the country since the start of the war nearly 13 years ago.
"The U.S. Embassy in Kabul has confirmed that three U.S. Citizens were killed during the attack in Kabul on January 17th. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of those killed" a State Department spokesperson said Saturday evening.

'Fearless' Chicago woman dies in Afghanistan attack

A Chicago native was one of the 21 people killed in a Taliban assault Friday on a restaurant in Kabul.
By Jonathan Bullington Tribune reporter 6:44 a.m. CST, January 19, 2014

She knew the risks, but Lexie Kamerman’s family and friends said the Chicago native would not be deterred from her goal: Helping young women in Afghanistan improve their lives through education.
"That's the wonderful thing about her. She had a sense of fearlessness," said friend and former personal trainer Sherrille Lamb. "She was so focused on helping those young ladies that no matter what the circumstances around her might bring, that's what she was there for."
Less than a year after she took a job at American University of Afghanistan, Kamerman was among 21 people who died Friday when a Taliban suicide bomber and gunmen attacked a restaurant in the capital city of Kabul.

"She was an amazing young woman – smart, strong, beautiful, funny, stubborn and kind," her family said in an emailed statement. "As you could probably guess, her death is a shock to us all and we can’t imagine a moment going forward when she won't be desperately missed."
Kamerman, 27, joined the private university last June as a student development specialist, according to a release from the Collegiate Water Polo Association, where Kamerman served as former director of membership.
She had been home during the holidays visiting her family on Chicago's North Side and returned to Kabul about a week before the attack, said Lamb, 48, a Chicago native who met Kamerman in 2012 at Elon University in Elon, N.C.
"She said she was sending me a package ... I was definitely wanting some Garretts (popcorn)," Lamb said in a phone interview from her home in North Carolina. The two talked via text message, Lamb said, looking forward in excitement for the day they both returned to Chicago.
"If I had a daughter, I would have loved to have had a daughter like her," Lamb said. "She accepted everybody."
Known simply as "Lexie," the Latin School of Chicago graduate was a standout water polo player at Knox College in Galesburg. She graduated in 2008 with a double major in environmental studies and in anthropology and sociology, school officials said.

Afghanistan restaurant attack was retaliation, Taliban says

The Taliban says its assault on a Kabul restaurant that killed 21, including 13 foreigners, was in response to a NATO airstrike that killed civilians.

KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban claimed Saturday that its devastating, commando-style assault on a popular restaurant was payback for a NATO airstrike that killed Afghan civilians, as officials raised the death toll in the Friday night attack to 21 people, including 13 foreigners.
With Kabul's close-knit expatriate community reeling from the deadliest attack on Western civilians in the 12-year Afghanistan conflict, the Taliban, the U.S.-led NATO coalition and Afghan President Hamid Karzai renewed a war of words over civilian deaths that underscored the tension between Washington and Kabul as they haggle over a U.S. military presence in the country after 2014.

KABUL—The deaths of 21 people, including senior international officials, in an insurgent attack in Kabul has rattled many expatriates just as the U.S. and its allies are embroiled in an escalating standoff with President Hamid Karzai.
Among the 13 foreigners gunned down at the Taverna du Liban (http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304419104579326491176304948?KEYWOR DS=afghan%20restaurant%20bombing) on Friday were the head of the International Monetary Fund in Afghanistan, the U.N. mission's chief political officer, and an aspiring British politician.
Many foreign embassies, organizations, and aid groups have responded by dramatically reducing movements and further curtailing their already limited contact with Afghans.
It was the deadliest attack targeting foreign civilians in Kabul since the war in Afghanistan began in 2001. Almost everyone among the diplomats, aid workers and journalists based in Afghanistan knew at least one if not more of the people who died that night.
Many expatriates in Kabul were also seething at how Mr. Karzai, who usually swiftly issues virulent condemnations when Afghan civilians are mistakenly killed by the U.S., waited more than 20 hours to react to the massacre at the Taverna. Even then, he used his statement to censure the U.S. and its allies, urging them to "distinguish between terrorists and victims" and saying that they have pursued a policy that had no achievements in the past decade.

Alexandros Petersen (YouTube)

Last Friday night in Afghanistan, the Taliban attacked a popular restaurant in Kabul frequented by Westerners, killing two Americans. One was Alexandros Petersen, a brilliant young man who was an expert on grand strategy and energy politics and who had graduated from Georgetown Day School, a private school in the District, in 2003. (His younger sister, Lydia, graduated from GDS last spring). Petersen had arrived in Kabul just a week earlier to teach political science at the American University of Afghanistan.
One teacher at Georgetown Day with whom he was especially close during his time at GDS and after was Sue Ikenberry, who said he had a special combination of brilliance and focus that marked him as “destined for greatness.”
