Vladimir Putin (http://www.theguardian.com/world/vladimir-putin) has said that gay people will be not be subjected to harassment at the Winter Olympics (http://www.theguardian.com/sport/winter-olympics) in Sochi, as long as they stay away from children.

Putin is currently in Sochi reviewing preparations for the games, which begin in three weeks. During a meeting with some of the thousands of volunteers who will work during the Olympics, he was asked why their uniforms were rainbow coloured, given the recent Kremlin anti-gay initiatives.

"We do not have a ban on non-traditional sexual relationships," said Putin in comments reported by Russian agencies. "We have a ban on the propaganda of homosexuality and paedophilia. I want to underline this. Propaganda among children. These are absolutely different things – a ban on something or a ban on the propaganda of that thing."

Putin also added that Russia (http://www.theguardian.com/world/russia) was more liberal than some other countries, claiming that in certain US states homosexuality is still punishable by law.

"We are not forbidding anything and nobody is being grabbed off the street, and there is no punishment for such kinds of relations," said Putin. "You can feel relaxed and calm [in Russia], but leave children alone please," said Putin."

... in theory, yes. In practice, no. A ban on the 'propaganda' quickly results in a ban on the act itself at the state's discretion.

Someone see you have gay sex? All of a sudden you're technically propagandist and are liable to be charged as such. Something can't be free unless the speech of it is also free.

How would they see you have gay sex if you didn't do it in public?

What constitutes gay propaganda? Can a gay uncle explain his relationship to his 13 year old nephew when the nephew asks about it? Apparently not.

Ultimately, this is all rooted in the belief that homosexuals recruit children into the movement.

Interesting. Did a search for a peeping-through-a-keyhole type of image and found this:

Sochi surveillance: Russia's FSB sees NSA's PRISM and raises it one with "Sorm;" can stop Olympic protests before they start by spying on gay athletes (http://aksarbent.blogspot.com/2013/10/sochi-surveillance-russias-fsb-sees.html)

If one of my uncles were gay and they taught my 11 year old brother that that was OK, I would never talk to them again.

Should it be illegal? No. But its disgusting. Gay propagandists are disgusting.
