A rejuvenated al-Qaeda-affiliated force asserted control over the western Iraqi city of Fallujah on Friday, raising its flag over government buildings and declaring an Islamic state in one of the most crucial areas that U.S. troops fought to pacify before withdrawing from Iraq two years ago.
The capture of Fallujah came amid an explosion of violence across the western desert province of Anbar in which local tribes, Iraqi security forces and al-Qaeda-affiliated militants have been fighting one another for days in a confusingly chaotic three-way war.
Elsewhere in the province, local tribal militias claimed they were gaining ground against the al-Qaeda militants who surged into urban areas from their desert strongholds this week after clashes erupted between local residents and the Iraqi security forces.
In Fallujah, where Marines fought the bloodiest battle of the Iraq war in 2004, the militants appeared to have the upper hand, underscoring the extent to which the Iraqi security forces have struggled to sustain the gains made by U.S. troops before they withdrew in December 2011.
The upheaval also affirmed the soaring capabilities of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the rebranded version of the al-Qaeda in Iraq organization that was formed a decade ago to confront U.S. troops and expanded into Syria last year while escalating its activities in Iraq. Roughly a third of the 4,486 U.S. troops killed in Iraq died in Anbar trying to defeat al-Qaeda in Iraq, nearly 100 of them in the November 2004 battle for control of Fallujah, the site of America’s bloodiest confrontation since the Vietnam War.
Events Friday suggested the fight may have been in vain.
“At the moment, there is no presence of the Iraqi state in Fallujah,” said a local journalist who asked not to be named because he fears for his safety. “The police and the army have abandoned the city, al-Qaeda has taken down all the Iraqi flags and burned them, and it has raised its own flag on all the buildings.”
At Friday prayers , held outdoors and attended by thousands of people, a masked ISIS fighter took the podium and addressed the crowd, declaring the establishment of an “Islamic emirate” in Fallujah and promising to help residents fight the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his Iranian allies.
“We don’t want to hurt you. We don’t want to take any of your possessions,” the man told the crowd, according to the journalist, who attended the prayers. “We want you to reopen the schools and institutions and return to your normal lives.”
Mike Gravel's impassioned answer regarding Iraq and Vietnam in 2007 immediately springs to mind.

Well there was no Al qaeda in Iraq before notorious lefty neocon/drone king fan Toby Keith and other freedom troops were sent there to spread freedom in a country that had not attacked US but was low hanging target for revenge seerkers/rapture acclerators/christion zionists/zionists/war profiteers/blackwatering holes/bankers plants and hosts of other actors. So Iraqis should be thankful to us for all the bloody freedom since then.

Saudis and Israelis are our closest allies in whole world. Neither one had sent troops to Iraq to join US though.

The United States will help Iraq fight an al Qaeda-linked group that seized the city of Fallujah in the west of the country, but will not send American troops, Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday.
"We will stand with the government of Iraq and with others who will push back against their efforts to destabilize," Kerry told journalists as he left Jerusalem for Jordan and Saudi Arabia. "We are going to do everything that is possible. I will not go into the details."
The Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL), which took control of Fallujah and Ramadi over last week, is one of the strongest rebel groups in Syria and has imposed a strict version of Islamic law in territories it holds.
U.S. intelligence officials said Friday the situation in western Iraq was "extremely dire" (http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2014/01/03/22166297-al-qaeda-linked-forces-capture-town-of-fallujah-in-iraq)after the radical forces raised their flag in the town of Fallujah -- site of two of the bloodiest battles during the Iraq war -- and gained control of the city.
Kerry admitted that the U.S. was "very, very concerned" by the fighting, and called ISIL "the most dangerous players in that region."
The ISIL claimed responsibility for a suicide car bombing in in Lebanon on Saturday.

"The Sunni Muslim gunmen in Anbar, which borders Syria, belong to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group, whose regional influence is growing through its involvement in the war to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The U.S. has already stepped up arms supplies to help Iraq’s Shiite Muslim-led government suppress the group, agreeing to send helicopters, missiles and surveillance drones.
Syrian Fighting
In Syria, the al-Qaeda-linked group has eclipsed Western-backed rebels fighting Assad. WhileObama has declined to intervene directly in the Syrian war, the U.S. may come under increasing pressure to contain the fallout from that conflict if the al-Qaeda militants gain a foothold in western Iraq, Ryan Crocker (http://topics.bloomberg.com/ryan-crocker/), a former U.S. ambassador to Iraq, said in an interview.
“If al-Qaeda manages to really take hold of western Iraq, that’s a pretty substantial base on Arab territory, where they’d have security and the space to start thinking about operations wherever they want to think about,” said Crocker, who served as ambassador from 2007 to 2009.

Does anyone ever ask the question:
What defines an al-Qaeda force or an al-Qaeda-affiliated force?
I would be willing to bet that people labelled al-Qaeda in Jan 2001 were less than 5000 people. Good luck getting a number from our government, I have tried many times. We have lost more than 5200 Americans fighting the War or Terror ™ or the last 12 years and still al-Qaeda seems to be around every corner. Everyone is al-Qaeda now. I guess they have grown their brand even more than McDonalds. The enemy that never ends keeps the sales flowing to the military industrial complex.

According to the aristocrats in Washington DC, if you buy any type of illegal drug, you're affiliated with al CIAda. DisInfomedia and the bureaucrats need a new location for the Military Industrial Complex as well as continued funding for the Security Industrial Complex.
It's all just moving the pieces around on the 'RISK' game board... BTW, first 90 days of FY2014, Federal government racked-up $613 Billion in debt.

Now I have to wonder if these guys are truly Al Qaeda or just locals trying to take back their country. If this is indeed Al Qaeda like the ones we see in Syria, this may just be Saudi punishment for the Iraqi government supporting the current Syria administration.
Either way, I say the world stay out and let em deal with their problems.

Or does the MSM just use the made up alphabet word "Al Qaeda" whenever they want to broadcast a "negative evil forces" campaign. Especially since it has been shown that there were less than 50 Al Qaeda in the whole ME.

Let's pray for an end to the madness over there. So much loss of life. Hurts my soul to see Iraq falling apart... But (as has been said here) if these are simply people fighting to retake what is rightfully theirs, Godspeed to them.

Probably part locals, part guns for hire who saw a need for their expertise, part flying under the Al Qaeda banner for easier access to a worldwide underground/black market movement.

Note.
McCain, in Israel, voices skepticism about Kerry’s Middle East peace push
Of course McCain is in Israel, and voices skepticism about Kerry’s Middle East peace push he wants Israel to rule the middle east. Since when has Bush or other Republicans ever pushed for peace with the Palestinian people?

I do not believe the term "al-qaeda". There may be agitators, but no "al-qaeda". The shiites and sunnis and , persians and arabs, no, no "al-qaeda"
