Had to confiscate those cell phones to make sure that they were all in working order...

Off topic, but I got a teaching point from this thread - I now have a "throw down" cell phone.

If I remember right, the coroner (who is also the sheriff of Kern Co.) determined that he died due to heart disease, not from the beating. And similar claims have been made in the Kelly Thomas beating case. Nothing to see here folks, move along ...

You are correct.

Footage from the confiscated phones was also deleted.

One lesson here is to duplicate and spread video as quickly as possible. Let the Genie out of the bottle. Let the cops hold the phone, while the video is on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter or whatever. Email a copy to everyone in your address book.

There are tools available that remotely stream video to a cloud server.

This guy's setup is pretty good. He discusses the websites towards the end of the video, IIRC.

The problem is it can take a long time to upload the video. I don't know of a service that streams to a server and saves it there without further interaction.

A streaming application is best – as it means the content you captured is stored offsite, away from the destruction of aggressors who want to censor their misdeeds. If you have a smartphone and you don’t yet have a free streaming application, download one:

Bambuser (http://bambuser.com/broadcasts) – for Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bambuser.broadcaster&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5iY W1idXNlci5icm9hZGNhc3RlciJd), for iOS (http://itunes.apple.com/se/app/bambuser/id344600665?mt=8)
Fi-Vo Film (http://fivofilm.com/) – for Android (http://market.android.com/details?id=com.fivofilm), for iOS (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fi-vo-film/id766255914?mt=8)

For more on these streaming apps, and for other smartphone apps, see: http://copblock.org/apps.
Just like a videocamera, the livestreaming app will capture both audio and video. But unlike a videocamera, the smartphone app will – so long as you’re able to get an Internet signal – push the content offsite. (If you are in a location with no Internet access, many apps – such as Bambuser – will save the streaming data to your phone, for upload once the device has signal.)

look, these people who get beat to death by cops is because they were out of shape. Hell, your average 12 year old boy can with stand several punches and tazerings if he's even half way in shape.

It's their fault for making those brave officers have to do that.
