Two senators from the opposite ends of the political spectrum are aiming to find some common ground in 2014 over the issue of the so-called drug war.

Conservative Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and liberal Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., connected last week via Twitter, after Paul began airing his grievances to commemorate Festivus, the fake holiday popularized by the sitcom "Seinfeld” in the late 1990s.

U, me & "feats of strength:" Senate floor, name the time MT @SenRandPaul A Festivus grievance re bipartisanship. Booker doesn't RT me enough
— Cory Booker (@CoryBooker) December 23, 2013

After Paul wrote that Booker “doesn’t RT me enough,” the Democrat referenced another Festivus tradition, responding, “U, me & "feats of strength:" Senate floor, name the time.”

That prompted Paul to respond more seriously, “how about mandatory minimum sentencing reform instead?” Booker then suggested they “throw in reforming Fed Hemp & Marijuana laws.”

"mandatory minimum sentencing reform" could threaten to empty out the prisons.

This can only serve him well, pretty soon the only people for the drug war will be those being enriched by it. The support seems to be rapidly disappearing, even though there will always be statists left and right who stamp their feet wailing about drug armageddon.

comments were encouraging. Not many people talked about either politician but rather the topic at hand. Rand is on a winning side of this issue and will be bringing in the brownie points for it it seems.

Apart from the obvious need for reform, Rand working with Booker will go a long way to softening his image with liberals.

To be fair, Booker's pic isn't much better. He looks like Vin Diesel's scrawny tweaker cousin.

I said Booker wasn't the worst politician that could come of NJ and was called an idiot (by libertarians)when I said he at least aligned himself against the drug war or at least understood the implications of one.

This is good for Rand.

//edit: i posted on this thread late (1/3) because i just heard about it being talked about by a few jerzians and shared on twitter... so its making a lot of positive waves in nj, at least the newark area.

Liberals want Big Government. Rand Paul will not win them over. Hillary Clinton will get their vote.

Keep telling yourself that.

Lots of independent and moderate voters do like the idea of bipartisanship. It's easily spun into how likable a candidate is.
