Poll: The most unpopular U.S. war

By TAL KOPAN | 12/30/13 6:33 AM EST

The war in Afghanistan appears to be the least popular war in American history, according to a new poll.

Less than one in five support the war in Afghanistan in a new CNN/ORC International poll, at 17 percent, and 82 percent oppose the conflict.

In CNN’s previous polling, while troops were still engaged there, opposition to the fighting in Iraq was never higher than 69 percent and belief that the Vietnam War was a mistake was never higher than 60 percent.

A modern US war that has lasted longer than WWI, and WWII combined would have to be severely unpopular.

Insurgents hit Afghan base, kill NATO soldier

By Hashmat Baktash January 4, 2014, 2:57 a.m.
KABUL, Afghanistan -- A NATO (http://www.latimes.com/topic/unrest-conflicts-war/defense/nato-ORGOV000049.topic) soldier was killed Saturday when insurgents attacked a military base in eastern Afghanistan, officials said. Five insurgents launched the early-morning assault on a joint Afghan-NATO base in Ghani Khel, a district in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province.
One attacker detonated a Toyota Corolla packed with explosives at the entrance while four others tried to storm the base, said Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a spokesman for the provincial governor.

In a separate incident Saturday in Nangarhar, a roadside bomb struck a police vehicle as it was on patrol, killing three Afghan police officers, officials said.

War?

What about the "wars" waged on the American public by the government?

I find them even more offensive.

Afghanistan is an invasion/occupation, not a "war". RP was right about that. @e_d-the "wars" tod mentioned are just as much "wars" as the nonsense the regime has been doing for a decade+ in the mideast.

Really? The most unpopular U.S. war in history? What criteria?

In the War of 1812, 4 of the 15 States refused to call out their militias to participate.

In the Mexican War, several northern states threatened secession over a war that would expand slave holding territory.

In 1864, the Democratic Party candidate ran on a platform of a negotiated peace with the Confederacy and got 45% of the popular vote.

And so on to Korea (Ike pledges to end the war as does McGovern in 1972) and Vietnam.

Those with no perspectives on history can not make sound political judgments.

The Vietnam war had far more protests.
Of course that would probably be, because of the draft.

Good point, Afghan freedoming was not a "war" either, it was OEF.

:) I probably would have served as an NCO in the War of 1812 for a five yr enlistment soley for one of those 160 or 320 acre Land Bounty Warrants in Arkansas or Missouri , but I was too young .
