JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, commenting on allegations the United States had spied on Israel's leaders, said on Monday such activity was unacceptable and had no place in the allies' close relationship. Documents leaked on Friday by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden showed the NSA and its British counterpart GCHQ had in 2009 targeted an email address listed as belonging to then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and monitored emails of senior defense officials.
"With regard to things published in the past few days, I have asked for an examination of the matter," Netanyahu said in broadcast remarks, in a clear reference to the alleged espionage.
He did not elaborate on whether Israel intended to ask Washington for clarifications.
"In the close ties between Israel and the United States, there are things that must not be done and that are not acceptable to us," Netanyahu said, speaking to legislators from his right-wing Likud party.

They reveal Nozette asking for a “token” and receiving cash in envelopes, talking about where he had stored stolen classified info on hard drives, and apparently talking about having already passed classified info to IAI. (which someone at DOJ helpfully redacted, but not entirely).

This apparent revelation leads to the question of why our government didn’t say anything about IAI, a much bigger fish than Nozette. But Israel Aerospace Industries is Israel’s prime aerospace and aviation manufacturer. Jonathan Pollard, a former U.S. Navy intelligence analyst who spied for Israel in the 1980s, is serving a life sentence for espionage; Israel has acknowledged he was an intelligence asset and has pushed for years to have him released.
The NSA allegations surfaced in the New York Times last week based on a leak from former agency contractor Edward Snowden.
After a few days of silence, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a political party gathering Monday that he had asked the United States to explain the reports, adding that spying among close allies is unacceptable.
Netanyahu also said he met with Pollard's wife, Esther, to update her on efforts to win her husband's release.
Some U.S. observers found irony in the twin Israeli reactions.

Stewart Baker, a former Homeland Security official in the administration of President George W. Bush, called it hypocrisy.
"Israel has taken chutzpah to new heights --- simultaneously demanding that the United States stop spying on Israel and that it release the guy caught spying on the United States for Israel," he said in a blog post on The Volokh Conspiracy.

It's a well known fact within the intelligence community that Israel spies on the US almost as much as Russia and China do.

So, aside from being the usual supreme hypocrite on the planet, I'm not sure what Netanyahu is doing by complaining.
