FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (CBS/AP) — A funeral was held Monday morning for a U.S. Marine from Massachusetts who was killed in combat operations in Afghanistan earlier this month.
The funeral of Lance Cpl. Matthew Rodriguez (http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/12/19/body-of-fallen-marine-returns-to-fairhaven/) took place at the First Congregational Church in his hometown of Fairhaven. He will be buried at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Outside, mourners gathered to pay their respects to the fallen hero.

The 19-year-old Rodriguez died Dec. 11 during combat operations in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. He was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force based in Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Rodriguez graduated in 2012 from Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School and enlisted in the Marines in August 2012.

British troops have marked their final Christmas in Afghanistan ahead of next year's scheduled pullout.
It was a working day for many of the 5,200 service personnel, now mostly based in the southern part of Helmand province, but there were carol concerts and exchanges of presents.
A Christmas lunch was served at the UK headquarters in Camp Bastion and four smaller remote bases.

3 Coalition Soldiers Killed in Afghan Car Bomb

KABUL, Afghanistan December 27, 2013 (AP)

A suicide car bomber attacked a convoy of international troops in an eastern district of the Afghan capital Kabul on Friday, killing three service members and wounding six Afghans, officials said.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the insurgent group was behind the attack. Television images showed remains of the exploded car in the street, and several armored vehicles stopped nearby.
The bomber struck the convoy about a kilometer (half mile) from NATO's Camp Phoenix base, Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanakzai, who reported the Afghan injuries.
The International Security Assistance Force didn't provide details on the identities or nationalities of the three service members killed.
