SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - Wyoming will challenge a U.S. government ruling that more than one million acres of the western state's land still legally belongs to two Native American tribes, Governor Matt Mead said on Friday.

In a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last week, Mead said he has directed the Wyoming attorney general to take aggressive action to overturn the agency's decision, which he said would adversely affect the state.

The land ruling was in response to an application from two sovereign native American tribes living on the Wind River Indian Reservation to the EPA seeking the same status afforded to U.S. states in order to implement provisions of the U.S. Clean Air Act.

A subsequent U.S. study found that the tribes should have access to the land, which includes the city of Riverton, that had been opened to non-tribal members under a 1905 act of Congress.

The governor told reporters on Friday that the Wyoming Supreme Court "has directly dealt with that issue and said clearly Riverton is not within the boundaries of the reservation."

The decision could have far-reaching legal and social implications for the roughly 10,000 Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone, who now have access to grant money under the 1970s landmark environmental law.

Well , in 1905 Congress opened parts to white settlement , most of which was never settled or homesteaded . They did not change the boundries of the Reservation . Best I can tell , anything that someone or a bank does not hold a deed to still belongs to the Wind River .

The Resevation was first established in 1868 , Wyoming became a State in 1890 . The land belongs to the Indians . Why they would want anything from the Feds is beyond me . Danke can see a real Indian Casino there , only ones in Wyoming :)

So now that land has owners besides the state? Good. As a tangent: People whine about the Confederate flag being a symbol of whatever the fuck. How about the abomination? The genocide flag that is flown so proudly. This usually shuts anyone, that takes issue with my admiration of Southern resistance, up.

The same EPA that sets "acceptable levels of pollution," that huge corps like IBM hide behind, up? Forgive me if I would see the EPA and the people that run it dead. Let's talk about UNited Fruit COmpany. Yeah, that Bitch you know as Chiquita banana... well her hands are covered in blood. War Is A Racket durrrrr.

Wind River fishing used to be pretty good . I dunno if there still is , but in the old days , if you could find a high altitude lake in the range , the fishing was excellent .

I wonder if Governor Matt Mead wishes Andrew Jackson was still President?

Honestly, WY is the 10th largest state and has less than 600,000 people. You would think they could learn to play nice.
