Aptly explained in this LRC Blog post:

Thus, by the mid-20th century, Ronald Hamowy could declare that the newly-christened conservatives, like Russell Kirk and William F. Buckley, who were invoking the 19th-century conservatives as their inspiration, were really embracing the conservatism of “the rack, the thumbscrew, the whip, and the firing squad.”

Could not have said it better myself.

/agree

Its possible that they used to be, but the name remained the same while the meaning of that name has changed it something completely different. Just look at the US. It used to be the envy of other countries. Now, it is the Model of how NOT to run a country.

This is the Illusion of Choice.

The Two Party system doesnt give you more choices, it gives you less. And its come down to the point of both parties being two Wings of the same Bird. They both want more Power, more Control, Authority, and less and less Accountability. If someone were to try to come down forcibly on a person and told them they had the Right to choose between Coke and Pepsi, it would be plainly visible that the supposed Right they were given (really a permission because it comes from someone claiming authority) that person would realize that their Right to Choose for themselves was actually being diminished because they couldnt choose to drink Water, Juice, Coffee, or Tea, or anything else other than what they are "allowed" to choose.

We would all do well to recognize that Republican vs Democrat is actually Limiting our Choices.

The Republicans used to borrow a lot from Classical Liberalism (some still do)...that's all but gone from the GOP save for the "fringe kooks" like RP.

"Law-n-order" only pertains to those who don't behave in the proscribed manners.

Yeah, well, nobody said the Republicans were Libertarian.

The Republican Messiah said precisely that:

“If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals — if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.”

― Ronald Reagan
