View Full Version : Missing American in Iran since 2007 was working for CIA

WASHINGTON (AP) In March 2007, retired FBI agent Robert Levinson flew to Kish Island, an Iranian resort awash with tourists, smugglers and organized crime figures. Days later, after an arranged meeting with an admitted killer, he checked out of his hotel, slipped into a taxi and vanished. For years, the U.S. has publicly described him as a private citizen who traveled to the tiny Persian Gulf island on private business.

But that was just a cover story. An Associated Press investigation reveals that Levinson was working for the CIA. In an extraordinary breach of the most basic CIA rules, a team of analysts with no authority to run spy operations paid Levinson to gather intelligence from some of the world's darkest corners. He vanished while investigating the Iranian government for the U.S.

The CIA was slow to respond to Levinson's disappearance and spent the first several months denying any involvement. When Congress eventually discovered what happened, one of the biggest scandals in recent CIA history erupted.

Behind closed doors, three veteran analysts were forced out of the agency and seven others were disciplined. The CIA paid Levinson's family $2.5 million to pre-empt a revealing lawsuit, and the agency rewrote its rules restricting how analysts can work with outsiders.

best and the brightest:

But had anyone at the CIA or FBI conducted even a cursory examination of Levinson's work product, it would have been immediately clear that Levinson was not acting as a mere analyst.

That question became even more confusing in 2009, when three U.S. hikers strayed across border from Iraq into Iran and were arrested. If Iran had captured Levinson, investigators wondered, why would it publicly accuse three hikers of espionage while keeping quiet about an actual CIA contractor?

I am still not convinced those 3 weren't spies too.

Bad for him.

Some interesting questions will come up once Congressional hearings on this start. Do freedom agencies operate without authority of Bush/Drone King or Congress?

In 2007, US media had been regularly reporting that then Iranian President was very anti-Jewish/wanted to do disappear Israel. Then why a Jewish agent was picked for this "rogue" mission by whose authority?

These photos from other thread:

WASHINGTON — The United States on Wednesday repeated its call for Tehran to help three Americans — Robert Levinson, Amir Hekmati and Saeed Abedini — return to their families after lengthy detentions in Iran.

The State Department said in a statement that the US is “respectfully” requesting the assistance from Iran’s new president, Hasan Rouhani. Previous requests made to former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad used slightly harsher rhetoric.

American missing in Iran 'worked for CIA'

(AFP) – 23 minutes ago
Washington — An American who went missing in Iran six years ago worked for the CIA and was not in the country on a business trip as US officials had claimed, US media reported.
In a case that had long been shrouded in secrecy, the Associated Press and The Washington Post published lengthy reports revealing how retired FBI agent Robert Levinson had been paid by the CIA to gather intelligence.
Levinson flew to an Iranian resort, Kish Island, in March 2007 to investigate corruption in the country, with hopes of also gleaning information about Tehran's suspect nuclear program, the reports said.

US State Dept and White House/DDK alongwith ex Prez Bush/Legal Councils Gonzales/Yoo (sic) need to send a letter immediately to Iran declaring that enhanced interrogations/water boarding are torture.

NY Times has known since late 2007 and continued to repeat lies throughout the years that he was on a business trip. From their own article about Levinson:

The New York Times has known about the former agent’s C.I.A. ties since late 2007, when a lawyer for the family gave a reporter access to Mr. Levinson’s files and emails.

American Al-Qaeda Captive Warren Weinstein Seeks Obama's Help

An elderly American man kidnapped and believed to be held captive by Al Qaeda for more than two years has a direct message for PresidentObama: He wants to come home.
Warren Weinstein (http://abcnews.go.com/topics/news/world/warren-weinstein.htm), 72, delivered the message in a new video released by Al Qaeda's media wing. Weinstein, who suffers from a heart condition and requires medication, is seen wearing a grey jump suit slouching in a chair, with a grey wall behind him. He asks Obama to negotiate directly for his release.
"Mr. Obama, you're a family man," Weinstein says
"You understand the deep mental anxiety and anguish that I have been experiencing for these past more than two years. And therefore I'm appealing to you on a humanitarian basis, if nothing else, and asking that you take the necessary actions to expedite my release and my return to my family and to my country."
It's the first proof of life video of Weinstein in more than a year (http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/al-qaeda-releases-video-elderly-american-hostage-warren/story?id=16293143) when Al Qaeda released a similar video. In that video, Weinstein suggested he would be killed unless the U.S. government met his captors' demands, which included releasing all prisoners from Guantanamo Bay. They also demanded an end to all U.S. drone strikes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and elsewhere.
Unlike the previous video, today's video shows Weinstein sporting a thick graying beard and trimmed moustache. It's not possible to determine the state of Weinstein's health from the video alone, but he appears forlorn, his eyes watering at several points, admitting he's not in good health and that "the years have taken their toll."
The video was emailed anonymously to a handful of reporters in Pakistan, along with a letter that was allegedly written by Weinstein himself. In the letter, he asks the media to "mount a campaign to get the American government to actively pursue my release and to make sure that I am not forgotten and just become another statistic."
The letter is signed "Cordially yours, Warren Weinstein."
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki released a statement saying, "We're working hard to authenticate this latest report, but we reiterate our call that Warren Weinstein be released and returned to his family. Particularly during this holiday season - another one away from his family - our hopes and prayers are with him and those who love and miss him."

Jon Stewart feels sad for "persecution" of Blackwater by US Congress after its agents massacred Iraqi civilians? Have to say I'm surprised to realize that Jon Stewart is such a major league douchebag.
