Brazil’s environmental and safety regulations – especially those mandating that every vehicle in the country has air bags and anti-lock brakes – have put the proverbial brakes on the Kombi production. But as a farewell gesture of thanks to the Latin American nation, Volkswagen is offering a limited edition Kombi to buyers and collectors.

We had one of those. It broke down on us all the time. I made up a song based on "We're an American Band." It was "We're in a Volkswaggon Van. We're in a Volkswaggon Van. We're coming to your town. We're gonna break right down. We're in a Volkswaggon Van."

That said, I'm sure other people have fond memories of them.

Did someone forget to pick up a copy of "How to keep your VW Alive"? - those things and bugs have got to be the easiest things to work on I've ever encountered. Easier than a Subaru even (before all the polutiuion control crap hid the engine...)

+rep for the song, though...

Those vans went from hippie vans to terrorist vans.

Isnt that what "The Libyans" Drove in Back to the future? LOL

Anyway, they will continue to regulate our entire lives away until WE put a stop to it and not a moment sooner.

I still say we need to start a company building three-wheeled cars and sub-mini trucks.

Sub-mini trucks are exempt from federal vehicle laws in 37 states. Three wheeled cars are considered motorcycles by the feds, so you can build sane ones without having to design them so they can be driven into brick walls at jogging speed without damage and have to instantly turn into a rubber room every time you do.

If we were to build them, they would sell. I have a design in mind...

Interesting. I would invest if you got this idea off the ground.

That's an awesome idea!

What constitutes a "mini" truck?

I remember something like this called the quadractor. Don't know why they went out of business, the thing got fantastic reviews and was dirt cheap!

The things the tires are mounted on that give it the nice clearance are aircraft landing gear. Don't remember it's top speed, but you're not driving on the highway in one.

There is also a thread in Freedom Living about a DIY combo vehicle with lots of farm/homestead extentions...

I had an 86 vanagon. Ran like a mofo. Tranny finally crapped out at 285k miles. Bought an identical one for parts. Drove it six more years.

My dad had one of these, once, though an earlier year. Not many had been imported and people would come up to him all the time and offer to buy it from him. He finally got an offer that was too good and sold it.

My God, me too. I'd love to have it back again. I wonder if the drivers still wave at each other?

Oh my brother used to check that out from the book-mobile when he was trying to work on an old VW beatle he had gotten from my uncle. That car would run fine and then just cut off for no apparent reason. Something about air cooled engines that baffles me. I do remember it had an "oil bath air filter". I still have no idea what that is. Fun book to read though.

Problem is that it only seats two. I need a three seater. (Me and my boys.)

This one is a one seater, but the chassis is based on a racing car cage so it's quite safe.
