The number of American people put behind bars in federal prisons across the United States has increased by 27 percent over the last decade, according to a report released by the Government Accountability Office.

The report that examined the Federal Bureau of Prisons budget also found that the number of prisoners in the US still continues to rise.

“The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is responsible for the custody and care of over 219,000 federal inmates-a population that has grown by 27 percent over the past decade,” said the report.

“A variety of factors contribute to the size of BOP’s population. These include national crime levels, law enforcement policies, and federal sentencing laws, all of which are beyond BOP’s control,” it added.

The growing number of Americans incarcerated in federal prisons has forced the Department of Justice to increase its spending on the federal prison system from just over $5 billion in 2008 to nearly $7 billion today.

The US has the highest incarceration rate in the world. In order to solve the growing problem of US prison population, US Attorney General Eric Holder announced in August that the Justice Department would no longer pursue prison time for “certain low-level, nonviolent drug offenders.”

Did he say it with a straight face, or was he laughing his ass off at the time?

The Prison Industrial Complex, WEPT with sadness for receiving $2 billion extra federal cash over the last five years because of the overcrowding situation. They cried that they had to all buy bigger briefcases, and alter their pocket suits to create deeper pockets to carry all those tax payer funds.

This is another welfare program that no one talks about (for the prison industrial complex, the courts, police, rehabilitation centers etc., and in a sick way, the inmates)

I'd be interested to find out how the number of Americans behind state and federal prisons has increased. That sure is nice of Obama's boy Mr. Holder to not pursue federal prison time for “certain low-level, nonviolent drug offenders" while they also reserve the right to prosecute people using recreational pot in states that have decriminalized it since their use of it supposedly constitutes "a violation of our federal DEA laws." Will somebody please page the doctor? Paging Dr. Paul.

Why exclude the military? They're often as bad - if not worse - than the rest of the grifters.

I think the figures in this article are a little off.
I believe the number of people incarcerated in the United States is about 313.9 million.

Really, then there is the priveledged 219,000 that don't even have to pay their own living expenses. I don't know the specifics but I think it's a program to help sociopaths that aren't lucky enough to make it into politics (and probably to get black people off the streets too.)

Phew... Offend anyone yet? Sorry. Serious oversimplification but I enjoyed it.
