HEMPSTEAD - A Nassau County police officer has been sentenced to community service for pointing his gun at a bartender, but he is staying on the force.
Richard Hefferon was sentenced to 150 hours of community service and issued a $500 fine after he pleaded guilty to menacing. Hefferon was off duty in 2011 when he pointed his gun at the bartender.
A judge also issued an order of protection for the bartender and says Hefferon cannot carry a weapon while the order of protection is in place. If he needs a weapon for his job as an officer, he will be required to sign it in and out.
