So recently the neighboring prison city in my county had its whack-a-citizen red light cameras called into question.

In summary, since no points were being added to the drivers record, it was a non moving violation. This was in conflict with state law.

Naturally the aldermen doubled down:

Rather than get rid of their easy money, they simply increased the fine and will now give points and warrants for those who don't pay.

War on Us.

But the city needs the money...

Think of the cops.

Think of the children.

What if my autopiloted car runs a red light and is caught by an automated camera?

When they installed those things here people raised hell with the city council and they were taken down within about 6 months. The thing that did them in was playing around with the yellow light times, and it was quickly revealed that the things caused a dramatic rise in accidents. Also they started ticketing people for making rolling stops while turning right on red. It pissed off enough people that our usually worthless city council was forced to act on it.
